The churchyard on the corner of 10th Street and 8th Avenue has been put up for sale. The Church of Gethsemane has been forced to sell the lot for fiscal reasons. Currently, as I understand it, a developer, Benancourt, is under contract for the sale, but it has not yet closed. Apparently there is a dispute over part of the lot that is now used as a driveway for the church, and that is holding up the sale.
The lot is being offered at 3.5 million.
Some neighborhood residents found out about the sale and are interested in trying to preserve the lot as open space. We are meeting tonight (Wednesday, October 11) at 8pm at the Tea Lounge to discuss possible avenues and any efforts that we’ve made to date.
If you’re interested, please come! If you have any information or ideas to share, feel free to email Peggy at Churchyard@earthlink.net.
Hi Maureen,
A short summary of what I know about the Churchyard sale is below. If you feel comfortable emailing this to the block association, that would be great!
Thanks,
Martha
