The mission of the American Business Women's Association is to bring together businesswomen of diverse occupations and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking suport and national recognition.
Athens of the South Chapter was chartered June 20, 1974. It was sponsored by Parthenon Chapter. Helen Nave was President of Parthenon and Mary Fagg served as Torchbearer, Hand of Friendship Chairman.
Pat Linscott (Helt) was appointed as our Charter President and served the three month appointment plus a full year term, as did our other appointed officers. Iola Watkins, Vice President, Norma Reed Bryant, Recording Secretary, Venia Lazenby, Corresponding Secretary and Jean Stratton, Treasurer. We were chartered with 28 members.
Our first meeting place was the B & W Cafeteria in Green Hills Village. The date of our first meeting was July 15, 1974.
We still have three active charter members of Athens of the South. Venia Lazenby, Augusta Kilcrease, and Mary Fagg.
Athens of the South Chapter will celebrate our 27th birthday in June 2001. We continue to celebrate as a strong and active Chapter reaching out our hands of friendship to working women of diverse occupations from every section of Nashville. We chose our name because of the connection with education for which Athens has always been known and for which Nashville as ''The Athens of the South is known today''. May we always remember our heritage and may we also always remember THERE IS STRENGTH IN UNITY.
