About our association

What is the ACCENT Neighborhood Association?

ACCENT, A Community of Central East Neighbors in Transformation, Neighborhood Association was started about 10 years ago by a group of concerned citizens that were tired of seeing nothing being done in their neighborhood. They came together and formed a neighborhood group to work on issues such as paving and other improvements.
Since that time ACCENT has continued to work on issues of improvement to this area. We are continuously trying to improve the quality of life in are immediate neighborhood. The association is made up of a Board that meets monthly and any citizens that have interest in their neighborhood. The Board works on issues such as development, public improvements, and informing the general membership of issues.
It is not hard to be part of your neighborhood association. If you want to be very active, you can attend meetings, serve on the Board or a subcommittee, and help with various other tasks. If you don’t wish to take on a lot of work and don’t have much time to commit, you can become a general member and just attend the two general meetings a year, while getting all the other communication benefits of being involved!

WHY SHOULD I JOIN ACCENT?

ACCENT is always hard at work trying to do things to improve the quality of life in your neighborhood. By volunteering your time to work in the ACCENT neighborhood or simply joining your neighborhood association you are sending a very clear message: “Where I live is important to me!”

There are several reasons to join ACCENT and get involved in your neighborhood:

Have an effective voice with city plans and decisions concerning projects or issues in your neighborhood that are happening around you.

Be informed and encourage open communication between the city and you, the neighbor.

Build community spirit and pride.

Plan for the future development of the neighborhood.

Decrease crime and work to keep the neighborhood safe.

Make our neighborhood an attractive, welcoming place to live and raise a family.

Organize social events and fun activities.

Provide opportunities to build friendships within the community.

Form a network of neighbor helping neighbor.

Where is the Accent Meeting Place?

Accent routinely meets in the Dahl's grocery store Community Room, E. 33rd Street and Hubbell in Des Moines, on the third Tuesday of each month at 7PM. All members are welcome.
An annual General Meeting is held the third Tuesday of October at the East Side Senior Center, 1231 E. 26th Street (265-8461) to elect members to the Accent Board. Newspapers publish any temporary changes to these details.
