The Montgomery County AHEAD Coalition, Inc. brings together a cross-section of the community in a countywide effort to reduce the use and negative impact of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) through multiple strategies across multiple sectors. This approach allows every person whose life is touched by the devistation of drugs to take action and make positive change in our community.
To get involved in community efforts, join the AHEAD Coalition by attending monthly action meetings, the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 8:15 AM at the AHEAD Office, 116 N. Green Street.
Over the past 3 years, efforts of AHEAD Coalition Members have resulted in positive change in several areas:
RISK FACTORS for substance abuse are decreasing in several areas: Perceived disapproval of marijuana use by peers has increased 5%. Perceived disapproval of alcohol use by peers has increased 9%. Perceived disapproval of binge drinking by peers has increased 6%. Perceived harm of marijuana use has increased 10%. Perceived harm of smoking cigarettes has increased 17%. Perceived harm of using alcohol has increased 24%.
PROTECTIVE FACTORS for reducing substance abuse are increasing in our community. Five new afterschool programs serving middle-school aged youth have been implemented. Mentoring programs serving elementary and middle-school aged youth have been implemented. Weekend alternative activities for middle and high-school-aged youth have been put in place. Two family-strengthening programs are serving ages 6-17 and their parents weekly.
Collaboration between community agencies is improving: Coalition membership has increased by 10 agencies this year. Montgomery County social services are being coordinated by two wraparound services coordinators. All three school corporations are building active PRIDE groups at the high school level. All three school corporations are participating in cooperative drug and violence education programs. Law Enforcement and Probation are establishing a presence in schools.
Because of these efforts, reported drug use by youth is decreasing! Self-reported tobacco use has decreased 61% since 1999,reported binge drinking has decreased 44%,self-reported marijuana use has decreased 42% since 1999 and inhalant use has decreased 40% since 1999. Prevention works!
Drug use does not happen in a vacuum, nor does drug prevention. Each one of us can make a difference in the life of someone who is faced with decisions about drug use. If you live with a preschooler, help him learn about safe medicine use. If you have a teenage friend or family member, take time to listen to her concerns and celebrate her successes. If you are an employer or an employee, help your workplace increase its bottom line by working to implement drug-free policies and practices. If you care for a senior, help manage medications that can become confusing and potentially dangerous. If each one of us reaches out to another, together we can make a difference in keeping Montgomery County safe and drug-free.
