To support the independence and dignity of seniors and physically challenged adults through programs of education and person assistance.
Assistance For Independent Living was founded in 1982 by people concerned about the plight of prematurely discharged hospital patients. The agency's founders quickly discovered that the inevitable frailty that accompanies old age can make performing tasks of everyday life difficult or even dangerous. When frailty is combined with poverty and a breakdown in social support, people who do not require 24-hour care are threatened with premature institutionalization.
As a result, Assistance For Independent Living evolved from an intervention to a prevention program. The efforts of paid and volunteer staff became focused on preventing situations that result in hospitalization.
Assistance For Independent Living connects people who care with people in need of assistance. Our Home Care Aide's assist with a variety of activities of everyday life. Specific examples include:
* Visit a client daily, delivering groceries when needed, retrieving mail from the mailbox, preparing lunch and taking out the garbage.
* Visit a client twice a month to perform housekeeping tasks too arduous for the client, such as vacuuming and scrubbing floors, kitchen and bathroom.
* Visit a client once per week to escort the client to the grocery store and to medical appointments as needed.
* Check on the client daily via the telephone.
* Assist client with bathing, grooming and dressing.
* Assist client in identifying and accessing community resources.
* Assist families with eldercare.
