The Bellemeade City Commission chose stop signs over additional speed humps to control a long-standing speeding problem on North Chadwick Road. Despite continual pleas from several residents for ONE additional speed hump that would have cost approximately the same thing as the two stop signs, the Bellemeade City Commission chose to put in the stop signs. I have been told privately by an "insider" that some of the commissioners did not want "corduroy streets" in Bellemeade. We, who live on the street do not want corduroy kids, bodies, pets, or yards, but that didn't seem to matter. I find that an interesting application of representative government in that none of the commissioners live on this street and do not DAILY witness or contend with the speeding. "Walk a mile in my shoes?"

Some residents and non-residents stop; many don't. I have witnessed two near accidents when one stopped and then proceeded but another never slowed coming close to hitting the one that had stopped. Those speeding down Chadwick from Shelbyville Road who do not stop are even more dangerous now.
I suggested early on that painting large white stripes on the street would make people more aware of the signs. The signs appear too tall from the seat of my car, but are easily seen from the seat of my 4x4. Maybe the heigth is also part of the problem? Maybe the real problem is that "stop-gap" measures seldom work and are usually domed from the git-go. But, oh well, at least we don't have those infernal corduroy streets, ...
