Our volunteer members provide communications during disaster and emergency operations when they occur, and for community events where public safety can be increased through additional radio communications by our members.
During the July 2002 flooding in central Texas, our REACT members provided communications support to the Salvation Army to allow their canteen trucks to remain in communications with our base unit while serving the flooded areas. These areas were generally outside of normal cell phone range.
But most of our members are licensed Amateur Radio Operators and many have GMRS licenses.
We can help you study for your Technician license (no code) or to apply for your GMRS license (no testing required).
GMRS radios rquire a 5 year license at a cost of around $80, but the license covers your entire family for legal operations. We have two GMRS repeaters in the area which allow our mobile radios to have up to a 50 mile range of coverage, that's most of San Antonio and surrounding areas primarily to the north and east of town. Coverage on the west side is a bit sparse due to a high ridgeline between the repeaters and that area at present time.
