Neighborhood Watch Alert

From: MCDONALD, Ingrid G.Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2011 1:31 PMSubject: catalytic converters thefts

A while back, I sent out a warning about thieves that were removing catalytic converters from cars as those cars sat in parking lots for long periods. Much of that activity was occurring in Denver but now we have a pattern starting here. 19 catalytic converters have been cleanly removed (either sawed or by use of other tools). Most seem to be Toyota 4 runners. Parking lots in apartment complexes, overnight parking at businesses, and a few in residential areas were involved and it is occurring in all areas of town. There is no suspect information SO I am asking everyone to Watch closer. If you are travelling through areas of town and see someone working under vehicles at unusual times, make that call to police! If you can get a license plate number and description of the suspect’s car or the suspect, that would be  greatly appreciated! These things are expensive to replace. Thank you!

This came from another officer on the department.  I am sending this out to all Block Captains to share with your groups.  This is something I had not thought of before.

Please look at your garage door

After our home inspection the inspector noted that our garage door had a dent in it.  Rhys and I were in the garage last night talking about it and trying to figure out how it got a dent in it. Finally figured out someone tried to break in.  Then I searched youtube and found the below video.  Please watch it.  I took the pull string off of ours and zip tied the lever up to the slider.  Now you have to cut the zip tie in order to release the lever.  Please pass on.

Subject: Fraud Alert

Passing this on so everyone knows this is happening. There is a huge possibility that it has happened in a neighborhood just south of Wasson. H.S. The young lady was very persuasive and persist e nt. She  dropped the names of neighbors on that street and said she lived in the neighborhood. The people did not recognize her. Please pass this on to your friends, neighbors, and family members that live here in the Springs. I will keep you updated when we get information. If you or anyone you know has had this happen, you may want to contact your bank to look for unusual transactions if you dont have online access.

Gold Hill Members Neighborhood Watch

I have been getting several reports of a scam going on in the skyway area but could move through Gold Hill.  We have reports of several young people, college aged boys and girls, selling magazine subscriptions in this area.  The scam varies from the “student” needing intern money for overseas schooling to selling magazines to injured troops overseas.

We have limited information at this time to follow-up on other than a possible connection with a tan colored van with Arizona License plates.

If you have been victimized by this scam and given a check to these people please cancel your check and call your bank to close your account.  They won’t be interested in the $25.00 check for a magazine subscription. What they are interested in is the routing number on your check that they will use to print their own checks with to empty your accounts.

Please share this information with your neighbors and groups

Thanks

Bob H.

This happen in Sioux City . This lady that sent this e-mail is the Health & Safety Director at Siouxland Area Red Cross in Sioux City .

This might be worth the effort of forwarding to neighborhood watch members.

Just last weekend on Friday night we parked in a public

parking area. As we drove away I noticed a sticker on the

rear window of the car. When I took it off after I got home,

it was a receipt for gas. Luckily my friend told me not to

stop as it could be someone waiting for me to get out of the

car Then we received this email yesterday:

WARNING FROM POLICE

THIS APPLIES TO BOTH WOMEN AND MEN

BEWARE OF PAPER ON THE BACK WINDOW OF YOUR VEHICLE--

NEW WAY TO DO CARJACKINGS (NOT A JOKE)'

Heads up everyone! Please, keep this circulating... You walk

across the parking lot, unlock your car and get inside. You

start the engine and shift into Reverse.

When you look into the rearview mirror to back out of your

parking space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle

of the rear window. So, you shift into Park, unlock your

doors, and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or

whatever it is) that is obstructing your view. When you reach

the back of your car, that is when the carjackers appear out

of nowhere, jump into your car and take off. They practically

mow you down as they speed off in your car.

And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car.

So now the carjacker has your car, your home address, your

money, and your keys. Your home and your whole identity are

now compromised!

BEWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED.

If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, just

drive away. Remove the paper later. And be thankful that you

read this e-mail. I hope you will forward this to friends and

family, especially to women. A purse contains all kinds of

personal information and identification documents, and you

certainly do NOT want this to fall into the wrong hands.

Please keep this going

and tell all your friends

Full View Fw: Painting of electric boxes by City Utlilites

Original Message ----- From: MCDONALD, Ingrid G. Sent: Monday, November 23, 2009 2:56 PM Subject: Painting of electric boxes by City Utlilites

Last week a resident on Ranch Cr. was contacted in person by two white males dressed in painter’s clothes and a yellow vest. The men said they were with Utilities and that they needed access to the back yard to paint the resident’s electric box. She asked for ID and the men said they had to go get their IDs from their truck. They got into a beat up old red pickup with a topper and drove off. The license plate was covered possibly with tape according to the witness. The resident then called Utilities and they told her no work order for that address was being worked. Good job all the way around!

I called the city Utilities department and they assured me that no electric boxes are being painted anywhere in the city. ALWAYS ask for ID and if they become loud, rude, or threatening because you are not doing what they want, then call 911 and stay on the line. Chances are good that this person is not a city employee! Make them wait outside as you confirm who they are and LOCK THOSE DOORS! If you need to confirm a Utilities worker’s employment, call 448-4800. If it is an emergency, call 668-8800.

I hope everyone will have a good Thanksgiving. I will be out of the office from Nov. 25th to Nov. 30th. I will return Nov. 30th and work from 7am to 5pm.

Sent: Wednesday, August 13, 2008 1:02 PM Subject: Longtime Resident Chuck Beale Passed Away Today
Block Captains please pass on to your groups.

Longtime Avondale Circle resident Chuck Beale passed away today.

His funeral will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 18th at St Michael's Episcopal Church, 7400 Tudor Rd, Colorado Springs. The church is just past the Margarita at Pine Creek on the corner of Pine Creek Road/Gillen Road and Tudor Road. A map is attached.

From Officer Dave Gilman:

Here is a  scam that is out and about.

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Hello,

As a Block Captain for our Neighborhood Watch I attended our first required Quarterly Block Captain's meeting Jan. 27th.  At this meeting Our Crime Prevention Officer presented something to us that I had not heard about, but perhaps you have. For those who haven't it's called Lock Bumping. He presented a video on Lock Bumping which consists basically of a modified door key which when inserted into your door lock and then tapped several times renders your door lock ineffective.

The basic principle is that by putting in this modified key and tapping the lock with a hammer, screwdriver, etc.  the locks tumblers become aligned and the key opens the lock.  When replacing locks, you are cautioned to make sure the locks are the tamper proof kind, such as Schlage, Medeco, and others which specifically state that they are bump proof. They are generally more expensive.

Lock Bumping has been around for a while and the police here in Colorado Springs have been reluctant to release this info fearing it might give the bad guys more info than they need to know. Now the police think we all need to be informed. Below are some websites that show and tell more in depth about this home security problem. It's nothing to panic about, but please check out this info so you will be aware, and then you can make your own decision on what to do.

All the Best,

Pat Carty
