Famous last words: ''willie don't be afraid of windows registry, its just something new to learn,no big deal.''

I'll agree with you, and please no engagement announcements, that getting around the registry is no big deal but I wouldn't recommend every T,D&H to make changes to it.

I prefer tools that alert me when changes are being made to the registry so that I am aware of these things when they occur. I don't like to load other tools which could create more trouble than they are worth to my equipment.

Not to fear

many good instructions available for understanding what the registry is and how to understand what it does.
Its just software.no fear understand just it.
Plenty of fear

My experience has been that people don't take to read the manual of a product that they just spent good money for and therefore don't get all of the benefits that the product provides.

To suggest to these people that they can and should hack their registry isn't good advice.

TECHIE IF YOU CAN READ

and follow and understand the concept
of system software design there is little to fear.the registry was designed for techinicial people to optimize the system to a given application and allow maxium performance.i agree non techies should not follow the discussion.
braintree library has an excellant tome on the registry structure and design by microsoft that is well worth reading. If you want your own copy it is a bit dear at thirty five dollars,i have seen it as cheep as nineteen dollars.how else are you going to learn on those cold nights at the keyboard, just think after a while you will be really dangerous.
there is a section for small tricks to try, obviously they tell how to backup in case of a major cockup.
