How Did We Get Started?

The University of Oklahoma Urban Design Studio, in partnership with the Tulsa Area Community Schools Initiative, Tulsa Public Schools and Union Public Schools, conducted a pilot program for a Neighborhood Planning Academy. Teachers and professional staff from fourteen elementary schools, as well as the community schools site coordinators, received training to assist citizens in producing action plans for the neighborhoods surrounding the schools. Neighborhood action plans were created during a series of neighborhood meetings at each community school from May 13 through July 1, 2008. As a result of the pilot program, a strategy was formulated for neighborhood planning on a city-wide basis.

As the end of the pilot program neared, a very small group Briarglen neighborhood residents were frustrated by the apparent lack of concern from the public. These residents decided to canvas the area on their own. As a result of their efforts, over 100 Briarglen neighborhood residents attended the June 24, 2008 planning meeting at Briarglen Elementary School. District 6 Councilman Dennis Troyer, Major Walter Evans from Tulsa Police Department Uniform Division East, Steve Carr and Monty McElroy from the City of Tulsa Planning Department, Cassandra Love from the Mayor's Office for Neighborhoods and Max Weins from the Tulsa Parks Department spoke at the June 24, 2008 meeting. Residents who were at the June 24 meeting agreed to organize a local neighborhood association.

An initial meeting of the Neighborhood Association was held on July 15, 2008. An initial slate of officers was put in place and the work began.

The Work Continues...

Please join us and invite others to our meetings to see for yourself what has been accomplished so far, and what CAN be done with your help!

When our energies are divided and diffuse, we accomplish less, or nothing at all. Together, we can accomplish great things!

We are looking for "block" leaders for small areas of our neighborhood as well as one zone leader for each quadrant of our mile section.
Block and zone captains will only be responsible for (i) making phone contact to members who have joined our Association but who do not have access to e-mail, and (ii) seeking to include neighbors who have not yet heard about us! If you would be interested in serving as a block or zone leader, please contact Christy Morrison at 629-0467.
