[Alert from Captain Hatcher - Increased Car Break Ins
Message from Captain A. Hatcher, Commander
of the East Precinct – Birmingham Police Department
Happy Holidays From The East Precinct
"We have seen an increase in the number of cars being
broken into recently. Criminals are canvassing looking for unlocked vehicles
with Christmas gifts and other valuables stored inside. Please review the
simple tips below: to ensure that you do not experience a Car
Break-In."
(1) Leave NO BELONGINGS visible inside the car.
.In other words, don't tempt fate by leaving valuables, or what appears to be of
value inside your car in plain view. This is just asking for trouble. If you
want to keep loose change handy, put it in the ash tray and close the ash tray
before you get out of the car.
(2) Lock your car to prevent break- INS. Just a
quick run into a convenience store might mean that your valuables from an
unlocked car or your vehicle might not be there when your return.
(3)
Park in well-lighted areas at
night.
(4)
Avoid taking purchases to your car and
stowing them. Sometimes, especially around Christmas time when we are doing a
lot of shopping, we will take our purchases to the car to unload our arms, and
then return to our shopping.
(5)
If you have to stow and return to shopping,
move your car, if at all possible to another location.
(Remember thieves are crafty. They can use a hammer and
with one hard blow break the lock to your trunk) If a would-be thief is
watching you stow your packages, he might be tempted to break in.
Be Safe!
