Garden Guidelines

Community Access. This garden is a community garden and is open to the public, both durig scheduled open hours and at other times when gardeners are working. Public access to green space is our reason for existence and will be a condition of our lease with the Trust for Public Land and later with the Brooklyn/Queens Land Trust(BQLT).

Garden Keys. Keys will be made available to any responsible neighborhood adults who are willing to obey the garden rules. The gate must be locked at all times when there is not a gardener in the garden. Please notify a coordinator immediately if there is any problem with garden security or if additional keys are needed.

Garden Opening. When working in the garden,please leave the gate open and put out the signboard. Except under extraordinary circumstances you should not lock the gate while gardening.
Scheduled Open Hours. Our garden must be opened to the public a minimum of 5 scheduled and posted hours per week for the months of April through October, weather permitting. These hours are decided by our gardening group and are subject to change by agreement. Generally, gardeners with beds will be required to make a commitment to be in the garden to keep it open during open hours.

Children in the Garden. We want to welcome children into the garden; it is an opportunity to teach and share something we love. Well behaved children may come in without an adult. Gardeners are free to exclude unattended children (and anyone else) who woll not abide with instructions and the garden rules, to protect the kids, and the garden from harm. Please keep dangerous garden tools safe and secure while children are in the garden.

Garden Beds. When available, will be allocated to interested gardeners who agree to participate, and do participate, in garden workdays, the ongoing maintenance of the garden, keeping open hours, and assisting in other tasks for the garden. If you go away for an extended period, please ask another gardener to maintain your bed and carry out your other garden responsibiities. Beds that are uncared for, for one month or mmore during the growing season may be taken back by the garden and re-assigned to other gardeners. Beds assigned to gardeners who do not participate in projects or ongoing garden maintenance may also be re-asigned to others

Picking and Harvesting
Flowers. There is no picking or harvesting of flowers or plant materials (other than herbs) allowed in the ornamental flower beds. These flowers and plants have been planted for the enjoyment of all. The occasional offering of a flower to a child visitor, etc. is fine, though when there are many similar flowers in bloom, as are the sharing of excess seedlings, plant cuttings or divisions with members of the community.
Herbs and Communal Veg Areas. Small quantities of herbs may be picked for household use. If we establish communal vegatable gardening areas, vegatables in these areas may also be picked by anyone and shared with visitors and neighbors, but please use good sense and don't take more than your share.
Individual Growing Beds These may only be harvested by the persons assigned to these beds, unless they give permisssion to someone else to harvest. Trellises and other equipment brought into the the garden and installed in beds by individual gardeners belong to those gardeners and should not be removed by any other person.
Sharing Communal Resources. Any resources in the garden (tools, water, peat, compost, etc.) that gardeners did not bring into the garden themselves are communal and must be fairly shared. If you have any questions about whether you canuse any materials in the garden, please ask a coordinator.
Water. Until a water connection is established for the garden, the water barrels, filled from the hydrant and rain, are our only sources of water. Since water is a scarce resource at times, no one should use up all the water watering their own beds unless the fill the water barrels. The only exception is to water new transplants or communal plants in dire condition. Any gardener who does not know how to fill the water barrels should ask a coordinator or other gardeners for a training session. Please leave the water barrels covered when you are done using them.
Animals in the Garden. No unleasehed dogs are allowed in the garden, and no out-of-control animals are permitted. Please keep your dogs out of the planting beds, and do not allow them to relieve themselves anywhere in the garden. Please do not feed stray cats or other wild animals in or around the garden.
Tools. All garden-owned tools should be collected and placed securely and out of sight in the rear of the garden at the end of a work session, and the wheel barrows should be locked up.
Cleanup. Each person is responsible for keeping the area around his or her bed clean and free of weeds. All gardeners are responsible for picking up on the front side walk, collecting and disposing of trash that blows or is thrown into the front beds, emptying and changing the bag in the outside trashcan and for generally maintening an orderly apperance of the garden. This includes weeding the paths and flower beds and deadhanging flowers, please ask for guidance if you aren't sure what to do about any plant. Please do your share - when you come to the garden to tend to your own planting bed, take a few minutes to tidy the public spaces.
Composting. Until further notice, Daniel Grulich is Composting Coordinator. Please follow any guidelines he gives you on how to compost. Gardeners and neighbors are welcome to bring food scraps (no animal products and no fats) to compost.
Private Use of the GArden. The garden may not be used for private parties without the permission of a coordinator and a gardener must be present and responsible at all times. NO ALCOHOL can be used in the garden except if there is a garden social event. No illegal substances or illegal activities are allowed at any times.
