Needlepoint for Beginners ~ Miriam Acard, Instructor from Stitch by Stitch, Ltd.

Here?’s a new offering that we are hoping will be of interest. Needlepoint for Beginners is a class that will show you the basics of the technique. You will be able to complete a botanical project within the allowed time- frame, or have enough knowledge to continue completing your project at home. It will be a simple botanical design of a leaf that can become a small picture, the beginning of a pillow, or perhaps a pocket covering?—and, maybe, even a new creative pastime! Come join us.

All the supplies are included with the exception that you bring your own small scissors.

Sunday afternoon, February 8 (Snow date Feb. 15)
1:30pm-3:30pm?–downstairs in the Carriage House (There is a concert upstairs)

FKP 2009 Tour Season -- Group Tours

The Freshkills Park 2009 Tour Season starts at the beginning of April. While registration for our public tours will open later this month, we are currently scheduling group tours. The free bus tours are scheduled on Wednesdays and alternating Saturdays from April through November with each tour accommodating up to 22 people.

Please contact Martha at Martha.Powers@parks.nyc.gov for more information.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

This year, we are looking to expand our public tours to include programming--talks, workshops, interventions, specialty tours, performances, and other happenings that take place somewhere along the tour route. We would like to solicit proposals for programs from interested individuals and groups of any kind.

SEIS SCOPING MEETING

Based on comments received on the Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement for the Freshkills Park project, it was determined by the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation that a SEIS (Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement) would be prepared that focuses on the proposed East Park roads. A meeting will be held to provide the public with the opportunity to comment on the proposed scope of the SEIS. The meeting will be on Wednesday, March 25th from 7-9 p.m. at PS 58, located at 77 Marsh Avenue on Staten Island.

Its grand architecture and generous proportions are accented by fine eighteenth century furnishings and fine arts collected by the family during its fifty years of residence.

The house is surrounded by formal gardens, tree-lined walks, grand allees, ponds, and statuary. Considered the finest English Garden in the United States, Old Westbury's plantings include historic varieties, new hybrids, and experimental plants.

Today Old Westbury is a showcase for many Family Activities and events offered throughout the year, including car shows, workshops, lectures, and more.

Garden Paradise" at the Arsenal Gallery
Wednesday, Apr 26, 2006
9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Location: The Arsenal Gallery in Central Park - 5th Avenue at 64th Street WIEN WALK AND ARSENAL

Manhattan

This exhibition includes both established and emerging artists exploring the idea of garden as paradise: sheltered and lusciously beautiful botanic spaces. Sometimes there is a hint of darkness, a threat ?– like the snake in Eden. Or the beauty is tempered by the reality that many 21st century natural paradises are endangered areas. But the attraction of these lush, magnificent green spaces is powerful and undeniable.

For Garden Paradise, eighteen artists worked in a variety of media. They include: LC Armstrong, Jennifer Bartlett, Larissa Bates, Cecily Brown, Elisabeth Condon, Gregory Crewdson, Ele D?’Artagnan, Julie Evans, Sally Gall, JJ Garfinkel, Paula Hayes, Susan Homer, Joan Mitchell, Roxy Paine, Robert & Shana ParkeHarrison, Elizabeth Peyton, Edwina Sandys, and Donald Sultan.

Curated by Lacy Davisson Doyle and Clare Weiss. Supported by the Lily Auchincloss Foundation, Inc. Color images available upon request.
