FAMILY PROGRAM
The Animated World of Robert Breer
Sunday, March 15, 2009, 10:30 a.m.
At The Noguchi Museum
This free event for children between the ages of 2 and 12 and their families, features an hour-long program of short films by artist and filmmaker Robert Breer followed by art-making activities. Breer, who has been at the forefront of American avant-garde cinema since the 1960s, is a painter and sculptor who turned to animation to create a unique and amazing body of work.
Introduced by David Schwartz, Moving Image Chief Curator, Breer?’s playful and lively films will engage the entire family and provide a new point of entry from which to view and explore Isamu Noguchi?’s work. Following the screening, Noguchi Museum educators will be present to facilitate activities and art-making projects. Families are encouraged to bring a snack and kick back while they enjoy the films. See below for a full list of titles.
Free admission, but reservations are required.
To register, send an email to smurphy @ noguchi.org with your family?’s name, the number of attendees and preferred form of contact (phone or email) or call 718.204.7088, extension 203. <
The Noguchi Museum is located at Vernon Boulevard between 10 Street and 33 Road in Long Island City. Sunday shuttle-bus service is available between Manhattan and the Museum. Click here for more information or call 718.204.7088.
The following films will be screened:
Homage To Jean Tinguely's Homage To New York (1960, 9 mins.) This record of the birth and death of Tinguely?’s famous auto-destructive sculpture at MoMA is itself a sculptural work, through its camera and editing techniques.
Fuji (1973, 8 mins.) Rotoscoped images of Mount Fuji, as seen from a train, are blended into the magical dreamscape of this lyrical voyage.
Swiss Army Knife With Rats and Pigeons (1981, 6 mins.) Images from everyday life are intercut with abstract and imaginary shapes in this virtuoso collage of drawings and live action photography.
Bang! (1986, 10 mins.) TV images of a boy paddling a boat, an arena crowd cheering, flowers, phones, and a wide array of personal doodle, photos, and assorted images whiz by in this mayhem-filled gem.
ATOZ (2000, 5 mins.) In this film dedicated to his daughter, Breer uses humor?—along with a frog, planes, and other shapes?—to look at the impact of the ordered alphabet on a child?’s awakening mind.
Trial Balloons (1982, 5 mins.) One of Breer?’s most lyrical films, Trial Balloons combines home movies with animation and hand-cut traveling mattes.
What Goes Up (2000, 4 mins.) The richness and the impermanence of life are captured in this rapid-fire animation of images capturing the joys of family and work life, and of food, drink, nature, and love.

SUPERDAY WITH GREG MOTTOLA
Sunday, March 22, 2009
At the DGA Theater, Manhattan
In a trio of films ranging from the low-budget indie cult favorite The Daytrippers to the Hollywood blockbuster sex comedy Superbad, Greg Mottola has proven himself to be a gifted director of screen comedy. On the occasion of his new film, Adventureland, the Museum presents a daylong retrospective with Mottola in person and a special appearance by Liev Schreiber, part of the all-star cast of The Daytrippers.
All screenings take place at the DGA Theater, 110 West 57 Street, Manhattan. All films are directed by Greg Mottola.
The Daytrippers
Sunday, March 22, 2:00 p.m.
With Liev Schreiber and Greg Mottola in person
1996, 87 mins. Imported 35mm print. With Hope Davis, Stanley Tucci, Liev Schreiber, Parker Posey, Campbell Scott, Anne Meara. Unavailable in the United States in film or DVD, Greg Mottola?’s impressive debut film is an incisive and offbeat road movie about a suburban family who packs into their stationwagon and takes a day trip to Manhattan to confront a philandering husband.
Tickets: Free for Museum members / $15 non-members.
Superbad
Sunday, March 22, 4:30 p.m.
With Greg Mottola in person
2007, 112 mins. With Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, Bill Hader, Kevin Corrigan. The time-honored (since Porky?’s) tradition of the raunchy teen sex comedy is kept alive by Mottola, producer Judd Apatow, and screenwriters Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg in this shaggy-day odyssey about the endless night of a trio of horny teens.
Tickets: Free for Museum members / $15 non-members.
Adventureland
Sunday, March 22, 7:30 p.m.
Preview screening with Greg Mottola in person
2009, 106 mins. With Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader. A high school graduate who had planned to move to New York to study art history instead winds up with a summer job at a seedy amusement park. Mottola?’s new film, which premiered at Sundance, invests the teen comedy genre with emotional depth and insight. Followed by Pinewood Dialogue with Mottola, moderated by Chief Curator David Schwartz.
Tickets: $12 Museum members / free for Sponsor-level members and above / $18 non-members.
An all-day pass for non-members, including tickets for all screenings, is available for $35. Order tickets online or by calling 718.784.4520.

Operation Filmmaker
With director Nina Davenport in person
Friday, September 12, 7:00 p.m.
U.S. 2008, 96 mins. Directed by Nina Davenport. With Muthana Mohmed. An aspiring young filmmaker from Baghdad is offered an internship on an American independent film being shot in Prague. He turns out to be as inept as he is narcissistic, and he insinuates himself into Davenport?’s life. In this hilarious and unnerving documentary, a good deed gone awry becomes an allegory for the Iraq war, when Davenport realizes she can?’t tear herself away from her needy subject?—and has no exit strategy for her own film. Screening followed by a discussion with director Nina Davenport, moderated by David Schwartz, Chief Curator.
Volver
Friday, October 3, 7:00 p.m.
Spain, 2006, 121 mins. Directed by Pedro Almodovar. With Penelope Cruz. In the latest and perhaps finest film by Spain?’s top filmmaker, three generations of women survive wind, fire, madness, superstition?—even death?—through a combination of decency, deception, and boundless vitality. Penelope Cruz earned an Academy Award nomination for her role as a single mother who opens her own restaurant?…and who hides a dark secret.
Offside
Friday, November 21, 7:00 p.m.
Iran, 2006, 93 mins. Directed by Jafar Panahi. With Sima Mobarak-Shahi. A group of young women are denied entry to an important Iranian soccer game because of their gender. A simple fictional story, filmed documentary-style against the backdrop of the real game, Panahi?’s deceptively simple masterpiece is a suggestive study of women?’s rights and political and personal freedom in the contemporary Middle East.
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
Friday, December 19, 7:00 p.m.
CANCELLED DUE TO BAD WEATHER
Romania, 2007, 113 mins. Directed by Cristian Mungiu. With Anamaria Marinca. In this beautifully performed drama about the human cost of petty bureaucracy in the final days of Communism in Romania, two college roommates try to arrange an illegal abortion. The Palme d'Or winner at Cannes is one of the key works in the current resurgence of Romanian cinema.
In Between Days
With director So Yong Kim in person
Friday, January 23, 7:00 p.m.
U.S. 2006, 82 mins. Directed by So Yong Kim. With Jiseon Kim. So Yong Kim?’s feature debut traces the joys and risks of first love for a young Korean-American immigrant. On the threshold of maturity, Aimie struggles to find her place in a new city, and her own emotional place in the world. The film won a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Screening followed by a discussion with So Yong Kim, moderated by Chief Curator David Schwartz.
Exiled
Friday, February 13, 7:00 p.m.
Hong Kong, 2006, 109 mins. Directed by Johnny To. With Francis Ng. In this powerhouse tale of childhood buddies-turned-hit men squaring off against a gang boss in 1998 Macau?—on the eve of the former Portuguese colony?’s absorption by China?—flames roar, waves crash, and dropped bullets thud like bowling balls. A Hong Kong action film supreme, Exiled also has unexpected moments of sentiment and tenderness.
Flight of the Red Balloon
Friday, March 13, 7:00 p.m.
France/Taiwan, 2007, 114 mins. Directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien. With Juliette Binoche. In this contemporary reinvention of the classic children?’s film The Red Balloon, a young Parisian boy, his harried single mother, and his watchful Chinese babysitter wander through the city. This is a tender and exquisite study of loneliness, beauty, and imagination by one of the world?’s great directors.
Killer of Sheep
Friday, April 3, 7:00 p.m.
U.S. 1977/2007, 83 mins. Directed by Charles Burnett. With Henry G. Sanders. The best-reviewed film of 2007 was made 30 years ago, but not released until it was restored last year by the UCLA Film and TV Archive. A landmark of African-American independent cinema, Killer of Sheep is also a neo-realist drama steeped in the lyricism of the blues, about a South Central slaughterhouse worker who struggles to support himself and his family.
Film program curated by David Schwartz and Livia Bloom, Museum of the Moving Image. Special thanks to Steven Hitt and Handan Ozbilgin, LaGuardia Performing Arts Center; Nina Davenport; Dennis Doros and Amy Heller, Milestone Films; Linda Duchin, New Yorker Films; Brian Fox, Swank Motion Pictures; Lori Fried, First Run Icarus Films; So Yong Kim; and Gary Palmucci, Kino International.
