Communicating During Difficult Times

Posted in: Woodlawn Park

Thanks for the info. Mr. Langford. I had not ever seen that. According to that document, it is clear that the Mayor and the Council did what that plan requires of them. Fair enough. I would have hoped for more than the minimum, though. Is that fair, to expect more? That's one of my questions?

I also want to suggest that our Disaster Plan is inadequate and needs some tweaking. It does not address communication, except to put the entire burden of communicating on the constituent. Should there be a section added that addresses what and how the Mayor and the Council communicate with the neighborhood during such emergencies? That seems reasonable, doesn't it?

Is it reasonable to expect the Mayor and the Council to gather themselves, assess the situation, decide on a course of action, and then clearly, fairly, reasonably communicate that action to their constituents? (the bold part is what I am suggesting is lacking, the first section we seem to be able to do).

I guess I am suggesting that the Mayor and the Council take on the added task of serving as a clearinghouse of information during a crisis.  But not a passive clearinghouse. During a crisis the need would be for a proactive center of information, the goal to be both collecting information and getting the information out in a thoughtful, thorough manner that would assure most, if not all, constituents stay informed and updated. I believe the web-site would merely have a limited audience, and during a power outage, an audience of almost zero.

First of all the whole city of Louisville were in the same boat.I know that my words Are just one persons opinion ,but this wind storm caught everyone off guard.Who would have thought that it would come this far inland! Its always hard to be without our nessessities but in stead of pionting blame all the time, shouldnt we be grateful that we made it through. and send our prayers out to the ones who lost family like the 10 year old boy that lost his life when he was helping his dad during the storm.I have a son and and when I heard the story on the news my heart hurt for that family.Well I will get off my soap box now. I feel that everyone did their best and I did personally see counsel members out checking the damage.Thats all !!!

Thank you Garvin for saying what we all are thinking.  Thanks Council for making clean up services available.  No thanks to complainers who only find fault.

Retha thank you for your comments.  I have called our Chief of Police, he is out of town for a few days, and I am going to ask him to set up a Block Watch Captains Meeting sometime next month to go over what we could have done and if we can do a better job.  What everyone has to realize is that most of our Council, including the Mayor and Block Watch Captains, have jobs to go to even during these times.  None of us have a staff to take care of a lot of the communications. As a matter of fact I had several storm related emails from Graham Honaker a aide to one of our Metro Councilman and a friend of mine, but none from our councilman Ken Fleming.  This does not mean that Ken Fleming forgot about us, but there was a lot going on in each district that had to be attended to.  My computer was off for 10 days so it would not have mattered anyway.

Tonight, 09-24-08@6:30, at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church locatred at 1395 Girard Drive, Ken Fleming will be there for a town hall forum, if you can go please attend.  I believe the meeting will be in the Visitation Hall at the rear to the old church building.

For everyones information our Block Watch Captains are volunteers.
