Nathan Lake, an ambitious 16 year old Eagle Scout, is taking on the job of helping to resurrect the fountain in the triangular lot at San Antonio and Atlantic. If you haven?’t noticed this fountain, you?’re not alone.
The fountain has been out of commission for a number of years. There are plants inside and surrounding the fountain. When asked why he chose this as his Eagle Scout project, Nathan replied that it was due to the fact there are buildings everywhere and not enough vegetation. He also stated that the fountain is a part of history.
Nathan approached Gaska, the company which owns the lot, about helping him to resurrect the fountain. Gaska has other plans, which include a Starbucks in the tiny triangular lot. This is not deterring Nathan. He has three months from August to get it to become a city landmark. The process includes gathering 2,000 signatures.
If you are around Bake-n-Broil (3697 Atlantic), It?’s a Grind (4245 Atlantic), or the Coffee Tavern (539 E. Bixby), help this project by signing the petitions.
A dream of Nathan?’s is for the triangular lot to become a park with the fountain as the showpiece. He believes the fountain and park would be a nice place for people to go and enjoy the surroundings.
If this is something you support, Nathan would appreciate your help. Write to Councilman Jeff Kellogg at 4116 Orange Ave., Long Beach, 90807. Let?’s help preserve and keep this historical public space in our corner of Long Beach.
