Until the early 1920’s California Heights was grazing land – part of the Bixby Ranch (Los Cerritos Rancho). It was the discovery of oil on signal Hill and the ensuing land boom in 1921 that caused the Jotham Bixby Company to subdivide and sell off the California Heights tract. Marketed as a “high class investment” for those seeking a home with the potential for oil riches, these lots were hot property, selling off in a number. Today, with dreams of oil riches long gone, it is the richness of architectural character and the overall charm of California heights that attracts homeowners to this neighborhood.
Generally defined by the boundaries by the Atlantic Avenue to the west, Cherry Avenue to the east, Wardlow Road south and Bixby Road to the north, California heights is more commonly identified as a neighborhood in the “Bixby Knolls area.” The historical district- from Lime Ave to Walnut Ave – was approved by the city of Long Beach in 1990. Since then, California Heights carries the distinction of remaining the largest historic district in Long Beach, consisting of approximately 1200 properties. Best known for the predominance of Spanish Colonial Revival homes constructed in the late Twenties, a scattering of other styles,- Tudor Revival, French Normandy Revival, and California Bungalows- grace the district contributing to the overall historic character and charm of this neighborhood.
We invite you to stroll through the Heights. Enjoy the fall colors. Discover the unique houses in the quiet community that is our home. Original street lamps and beautifully aged tree-lined streets contribute to the overall ambience of this lovely neighborhood.
