This area, once dominated by the historical Indian School and Carnation plant is now referred to as Uptown Phoenix, others call it Midtown.
Carnation has long since closed its doors and faded from the minds of our elders. The school that shares its name with one of Phoenix' most well-known thoroughfares: Indian School Road is also closed, but not forgotten.
The area surrounding the school has been transformed into arguably one of modern Phoenix' best public parks.
Central - Originally called "Center", this north-south avenue was the center of the original 14 block by 14 block townsite of Phoenix, Arizona Territory. It separates the "Streets" to the east and the "Avenues" to the West. The original townsite, by the way, was from Van Buren (northern edge) to Harrison Street to the south (seven blocks wide by seven blocks deep). The streets and avenues were originally named after Indian tribes.
