On Thursday, October 3, 1985, a group of neighbors met to discuss organizing a Block Association. An organizing meeting took place. The purpose of the meeting was to address the concerns and conditions surrounding Wakefield Playground. The Organizing Committee was formed, and it became the driving force to correct the conditions in the playground.
In August 1996, a neighbor put out a flyer calling for block action to address the concerns of block residents and the Wakefield Playground. With new energy and past experience, neighbors mobilized to address the new concerns of Carpenter Avenue residents (239th-240th).
The group of neighbors met in the playground to discuss the quality of life on our block. We talked about the sanitation, police, traffic and park departments' responsibility to provide us with adequate City services. There was much concern expressed about the violation of the NYC Noise Control Codes (Section 24-237 and 24-241.1 Equipment Noise and Loud Music).
We talked about regrouping as the Carpenter Avenue Organizing Committee to remedy those concerns. There were many new homeowners on our block since the committee ceased to be active. We decided to conduct a survey. As a result of our survey, we developed a QUALITY OF LIFE PROJECT!
The CARPENTER AVENUE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE again became an active, non-profit, grassroots-community group. It is our mission to improve and preserve the quality of life in our community!
