Something new to come to Castlegate!

Posted in: Castlegate

I had brought up the idea to Mary from Oasis on a Castlegate BBQ, this was several months ago.  I was told that she could even get the local grocery stores to donate the hamburgers and hot dogs, along with the buns.  Wow that sounds great.  Nothing ever became of it.  Guess we are on our own again. With it being so hot now maybe a BBQ would work out better in Sept. or Oct. I think a Play day with a Softball event might go over.  Heck I will burn .. errr cook the hot dogs :)

Yeah October would probably be the better time as it starts to actually cool off and be comfortable.

We attempted this oh goodness 3 1/2 years or so ago, unfortunately there were only maybe 10-15 people there, we had free food and all, it was very sad IMO.

We've lived here for 3.5 years now and we are friends with our neighbors next door and across the street. The drug dealer ones on the other side we knew and talked to but they moved.

We came from a community where we lived on a culdesac and it was a great experience. We looked out for one another and the kids. We'd have pool parties and BBQ, hang out on the weekends together. We don't have kids so that seems to be an issue.  The mentality of people here is to stick to themselves...the block walls don't help that. Where I grew up we had chain link fences or none at all and we knew everyone on our street.

Too bad we didn't go with another management company; the one that offered a portable BBQ! When I was on the board, I had suggested early on to have a "fall or spring" festival - BBQ, games for the kids, etc. Nothing too elaborate, but of course, any idea I ever had was dismissed or shot down.

These gatherings were a staple where we used to live though. It promotes community pride and encourages people to get involved not too mention people then look out for each other. Its hard work putting it together though, especially to ask for donations of food/drink in this economy - turn out was good but could have been better. The key is getting people to come out from behind their 4 walls and want to get to know their neighbors. Most people say oh yeah, I want to get involved..blah blah blah, but when push comes to shove they fold and the excuses start to fly.

We'd help but something together but as a community and not one person....and in cooler weather of course Laughing

I actually had a neighbor come over an borrow a cup of sugar just the other day :) Like most of you, I would also like to know my neighbors better. I keep trying to say hi to my new neighbors on my left, but we're always just missing one another. I'm out jogging just about every evening, but I rarely see anyone. I think having a neighborhood bbq is a great idea.
