The Chickasaw Federation, Inc. is a coalition of residents, block clubs, churches, businesses and other stakeholder organizations working to sustain and improve the quality of life of the Chickasaw neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky.
The objectives and purposes of the Chickasaw Federation are:
1. To provide a representative organization for the social, health, economic, and political development of the Chickasaw neighborhood.
2. To raise the level of consciousness and awareness of the Chickasaw residents socially, economically and politically.
3. To promote cooperation among neighbors and to advocate for the needs of the community.
The Chickasaw Federation was established in December, 1979 out of the need to address the following problems: (1) the property decay taking place in the area, (2) the need for a community center for youth and forums, and (3) the need for a collective voice to speak for the neighborhood.
Chickasaw is a neighborhood in Louisville, Jefferson County Kentucky, USA. Chickasaw is part of the greater West Louisville area, a long-standing working class community linked by heritage and shared development.
Chickasaw is a predominantly black, middle- and working class. The 2000 U.S. Census reported the population of the Chickasaw at 5,517 persons.
Chickasaw embodies the community self-help ethic born from the days when part of the area was known as "Little Africa", a Black district of the city settled in 1870s. The Chickasaw neighborhood has a rich history of multi-racial advocacy to improve the quality of life for the community, the City of Louisville and the world society. Historical markers throughout the neighborhood gives notice of the area's rich heritage and fight for community.
The nucleus of the neighborhood is Chickasaw Park. The park is the focal point of family, neighbor and community gatherings and events. There was a time when Louisville parks were reserved for whites only, except for Chickasaw Park that was reserved for blacks. The community has since progressed from that segregate past working presently to create change for the betterment of the Chickasaw neighborhood.
