Clearwater Beach is a barrier island connected to Clearwater by a 2 mile causeway and a city charter, i.e. it is a Clearwater neighborhood, not a separate municipality. Sometimes called Clearwater's Beach, it is a montage of single family homes, condominiums, tourist-resort lodging, retail, restaurant, and entertainment facilities, including the Marina with one of the largest fishing boat fleets in Florida, all within easy walking distance from the Gulf of Mexico to the west and Clearwater Harbor to the east. The wide and long sandy beach attracts tourists from all over the globe as well as day visitors from Clearwater and the rest of the Tampa Bay Region.
Subdivisions of the Clearwater Beach neighborhood include Carlouel at the far northern end, the north beach residential area, the north beach tourist-resort area, the Mandalay commercial area, the south beach tourist-resort area, the two south beach residential fingers of Devon Drive and Bayside Drive, and the Clearwater Point condominium cluster at the southern end.
Clearwater Beach has a non-denominational community church (Chapel by the Sea), a branch library, a rec center with tennis and basketball courts (and by Spring 2000 a swimming pool) and other recreational activities, a public boat ramp next to the rec center, a police sub-station, and a fire/EMS sub-station. The county bus system (PSTA) serves the beach as does our own Jolley Trolley, both systems connecting Clearwater Beach with downtown Clearwater, Island Estates, and Sand Key.
Sunsets are enjoyed daily by residents and visitors alike up and down the beachfront, by some in quiet solitude, by others at the Sunsets at Pier 60 celebration, where crafters, buskers, and other entertainment are found every evening before, during, and after sunset.
There is a visitor information center located in the Marina lobby, and the Clearwater Beach Chamber of Commerce is located in the Days Inn at 100 Coronado Avenue.
The main entry to Clearwater Beach is in transition during 1999, with a new roadway under construction culminating in a round-about near Pier 60 surrounding a fountain shooting streams of water up to 45' in the air.
The Clearwater Beach Association has served our beach community for over 50 years, providing information to/from city government, providing forums for issues of public interest, including candidate forums, and providing opportunities for neighborhood social activities.
Membership dues are $15 per year per household and per business. 1999 membership is over 180 households and over 70 businesses.
The Association membership elects five directors annually for a three year term, with a total board of fifteen directors. The directors elect officers annually from within the board. The Board of Directors meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 pm at the Beach Rec Center on Bay Esplanade. The Board meetings are open meetings, and both attendance and participation of members is encouraged.
