New Westminster Fire Codes

Sep 29, 2002

On August 5, 2002, the City Council approved the adoption of the International Building Codes. The new code includes some changes for Westminster residents reguarding the use of grills on balconies and the use of fireworks.
The new fire code states that Charcoal burners and other open flame cooking devices shall not be operated on cumbustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. One and two family are exempt from this requirement as are apartments and condominiums that have fire sprinkler systems to protect those areas. The city will now enforce the requirement.
The second change defines the use of fireworks. Fireworks will now be permitted during the three-day period from 12:00 A.M. on July 3rd to 12:00 P.M. on July 5th. The only fireworks permitted include sparklers, "worms," small fountains and other items that do not explode or leave the ground.
CaLL 303-430-2400 ext 2453 for questions. The new fire code will be phased in over the next few months.
