Historical Information on Denniston Park

On May 27, 1891, Mr. Franklin Thornton purchased 160 acres for a total price of $1.00. On December 17 of that same year, Mr. Thornton sold the land to Mr. Samuel L. & Sarah A. Denniston for $1,600.

During the late 1920s and early 1930s, our current Denniston Park (between Denniston Drive & Drexel Avenue) was a spring-fed public lake with boats and a public beach. On March 23, 1931 Denniston Homestead was incorporated as Denniston Park Edition.

By the 1930s and 1940s lots were being purchased and homes built. One of the homes, 2616 Denniston Drive, was owned by one of the Dennistons' at one point. Mr. & Mrs. Samuel L. Denniston's present home was built in 1934 replaced the original farm house, and is located at 3140 NW 24th Street (between Land & Drexel).

The Fire Station located on NW 23rd Street near Drexel Avenue, was a former site for a poultry barn.

During the 40s and 50s, Taft Stadium High School on May & NW 27th Street was used on weekends for professional sports car racing for Oklahoma City.
