MUNICIPAL BUILDING TIME CAPSULE


 

The DMHS joined the city June 14, 2010 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of laying the cornerstone at the Des Moines Municipal Building (City Hall).

 

If you would like to make a suggestion for what should be included in this new time capsule, to be opened in the year 2110, please put your entry directly into the new time capsule displayed on the 2nd floor of

City Hall, or contact the DMHS.

DMHS LOGO CONTEST

A contest to design a DMHS logo was announced July 27.  Entries are due October 1.    See the website:

Free parking is available in the lot to the east.

The business meeting follows the program,

at about 6:45 - 7:00 p.m.

THE EAST VILLAGE

SARAH C. OLTROGGE, will speak about the East Village for the program.  She has authored a book about what is now called ‘The East Village’ that includes many older photographs of the neighborhood. 

 

If you arrive for the meeting before 5:45 you may tour the Iowa Genealogical Society.    


ABOUT THE DES MOINES HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Des Moines Historical Society of Des Moines, Iowa held its’ organizational meeting Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the Des Moines Birthplace/Fort Des Moines II Memorial Cabin.  Article II of the bylaws defines:  “The purpose of the DMHS is to promote the preservation and study of the history and heritage of Des Moines, Iowa.”

 

Officers and Board Members for 2009 and 2010 are:

  • § Suggesting names for the new SE Connector Bridge
  • § Centennial of the DM Municipal Bldg. Celebration and filling the next City Hall Time Capsule
  • § Civil War Sesquicentennial – Des Moines’ stories
  • § Cubs Baseball Night
  • § Helping members learn to research

The DMHS will work toward:

  • § Finding ways to celebrate DM history and get the community involved
  • § Holding quarterly meetings presenting topics relevant to the history of Des Moines
