You are welcome to join us to study, preserve and present the history of Iowa’s Capital City.


 

NEXT MEETING

 

When:    Sunday, July 24, 2011

From:     1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Where:    Redhead Park

At:         E. 18th St. & Dean Av.

 

The program about Des Moines and the Civil War, including Camp Burnside, which occurred on the site of Redhead Park, will begin at 1:00. 

v  You are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

v  Light refreshments will be provided.

v  The business meeting will begin about 2:00 and last until 3:00. 

Everyone is welcome to attend.

 ‘MEMBERS ONLY’ EVENT

                                                                                               

 

In honor of the 100th Anniversary of the EMC Insurance Company, the history room of the company will open to the members of the DMHS on Saturday, August 6, 2011, at 10:00 a.m.

Many exhibits show the history of the company since its’ 1911 inception in Des Moines. 

 

Please enter the building on the corner of 7th and Walnut.  The room is on the skywalk level. 

                                               

 

DMHS MEMBERS LEARN ABOUT HISTORICAL RESEARCH RESOURCES.   A special research session for members was held at the State Historical Library May 14. The members learned about the resources available; including the special collections of photos and many other items, such as Civil War diaries.

160 YEARS – The town of Fort Des Moines was incorporated September 22, 1851.


THE DES MOINES HISTORICAL SOCIETY of Des Moines, Iowa held its’ organizational meeting Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the Des Moines Birthplace/Fort Des Moines II Memorial Cabin.  Article II of the bylaws specifies:  “The purpose of the DMHS is to promote the preservation and study of the history and heritage of Des Moines, Iowa.”   The Officers and Board Members for 2011 are:

~ David Coates, Board ~ Karen Hanley, Board ~ Sarah Oltrogge, Board ~ Jacob Shoemaker, Board ~ Julie Thompson, Board

 

 

 

Quarterly meetings, are held in January, April, July and October.  At each quarterly meeting a program relating to Des Moines history is presented.  The DMHS website is: http://desmoineshistoricalsociety.org, and you are invited to join the DMHS page on Facebook also.  Please call Pat Meiners at 515-278-1234 with

DMHS Meetings & activities include:

  • § 4th QUARTER MEETING – Thursday, October 27, 2011 topic: The DM “Hall of Fame” – Nationally famous people with ties to Des Moines. The program begins at 6:00; the meeting about 7:00, at the Iowa Genealogical Society, 628 E. Grand. You may park in the ramp at Pennsylvania & East Grand.    
  • § Presentations to groups, and television reports about historical DM citizens and other topics. 
  • § Centennial of the DM Municipal Bldg. Celebration and filling the next City Hall Time Capsule
  • § Special ‘MEMBERS ONLY’ events such as private home and other tours and research help.

The DMHS works to:

  • § Get the community involved in Des Moines history
  • § Make Des Moines history relevant and interesting
  • § Have quarterly programs to inform citizens about the history of Des Moines
