Mission
The Detroit Walk of Stars Foundation a 501 c 3 nonprofit organization, founded in 1997, was established to strengthen and preserve Detroit?’s unique cultural heritage, in support of educational, enrichment and training opportunities for Detroit youth.
Our principles go far beyond bricks and mortar or concrete and stars. But upon the precepts of fostering community upliftment, urban renewal, a positive image of Detroit, community morale; and pride in Detroit?’s rich and unique cultural heritage. Moreover, enriching the lives of Detroit youth, through an annual Tribute to Great Detroiters Youth Talent & Scholarship Competition and Awards Program
From legendary fur traders to automotive to Motown to the Detroit Renaissance?…Detroit has a remarkable story to tell, and legacies to unveil, along Detroit?’s historic walk-of-stars. The ribbon-cutting, Unveiling & Dedication of Stars, brandishing the names of great Detroit achievers of national acclaim, matched by adjacent streetlight pole banners, is scheduled to take place along historic Woodward Avenue in Midtown, this September. The Unveiling will include twenty, 50-to-60 pound, brass/alloy stars, set in mauve stone aggregates, surrounded by colored concrete and grey brick pavers.
Youth Enrichment Program
The Detroit Walk of Stars Tribute to Great Detroiters Youth Talent & Scholarship Competition and Awards Program provide Detroit youth in grades 5-thru-12 with
*a platform for their creative expression and presentations,
*awareness of their local cultural heritage, and
*Recognition, trophies, awards and scholarship placements for their talent, to empower them to become Detroit's future achievers.
The Detroit Walk of Stars Tribute to Great Detroiters Youth Talent & Scholarship Awards took place on April 20, 2000, at the Masonic Temple in Detroit. Over 100 Detroit youth representing various schools throughout Detroit, performed and exhibited their creative tributes to famous Detroiters, in the categories of art, music, dance, drama, poetry, science and special projects. U.S. Congressman John Conyers, Motown Legends: The Miracles and Tops, and the legendary Erma Henderson were special honored guests and received tribute presentations by some of Detroit most talented youth. In the inspiring words of Deputy Mayor Freman Hendrix, Honorary Chair of the Tribute Awards, he had this to say about the program. ?“This is very special. Every single child here tonight will remember this program for the rest of their lives?”.
Eleven Detroit youth participants were the recipients of scholarships and placement into educational and enrichment programs which will expand upon their individual potential. Scholarship sponsors included, Detroit Edison, The Wellness Plan, Comerica, The United Negro College Fund, and Ronald McDonald House Charities. Other program sponsors included IBM, Comcast Cablevision, Coca-Cola, WJLB FM98, The Detroit Medical Center, Masonic, and Detroit Public TV; with WXYZ Channel 7's Mark Hayes and WJLB's Reggie Reg, as Emcees.
