TRASH COLLECTION
Collection is at the rear of the house or at the garage. If possible, trash cans should be visible from the street. Rumpke is not permitted to enter fenced areas, garages, or basements. Rumpke will empty three (3) standard trash cans (32 gallons) or the equivalent at the rear. All loose trash should be bagged to help prevent spillage and to keep trash from sticking to the bottom of the can during cold or wet weather. Additional trash properly contained in standard cans or bags should be placed at the curbside for collection. Regular household waste is accepted but you may also dispose of a large item, such as a piece of furniture if it is taken to the curbside. Give Rumpke a courtesy call if you have a large item. NOT ACCEPTED are liquids, such as gasoline or paint, building materials such as bricks or concrete, auto parts such as batteries or tires, and yard waste such as grass or leaves.
RECYCLING
Rumpke provides an 18-gallon recycling bin for your use.
ITEMS ACCEPTED are Plastic bottles and jars #1 through #7 items used for food, personal hygiene, or household supplies. Newspapers including inserts. Brown grocery bags. Telephone books. Magazines and catalogs up to one inch thick. Office and computer paper including junk mail. Shredded office paper placed in clear plastic bags. Paperboard such as beverage cases, gift boxes, cereal boxes, cake mix boxes, etc. Glass bottles and jars clear or color. Aluminum beverage cans. Tin, steel, and bi-metal food cans. Corrugated cardboard broken down and/or bundled two feet by two feet. Rinse all jars and cans. You do not need to remove paper labels.
NOT ACCEPTED are plastic fast food containers and similar food containers such as cool whip tubs, plastic grocery bags, pizza boxes, household batteries, motor oil containers, tissue paper, or any item with food contamination.
YARD WASTE
Louisville Metro prohibits the mixture of significant amounts of plant waste with household trash. Yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, shrubbery, and twigs. Place items in a standard trashcan marked “yard waste”, a paper or plastic bag, or bundle the items in lengths not to exceed four feet in length. NOT ACCEPTED are branches larger than three (3) inches in diameter or four (4) feet in length or large amounts of dirt and rock.
Only if a holiday occurs on Monday or Tuesday will your collection day change to Wednesday for that week. A holiday on any other day will not alter your collection day. Holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Services are provided by Rumpke of Kentucky, Inc. All services are on Tuesday. Please have your trash, recycling, or yard waste out by 6:00 AM.

Rumpke services your city with rear door trash collection. A Rumpke employee goes to the house or garage area to pick up the resident’s trash. There are some issues concerning this service that may need clarification.
1. Rumpke employees are not permitted to enter a garage, basement, fenced yard, or other enclosed area. Our insurance policy restricts us in this matter. This is for the resident’s protection as well as Rumpke’s. No one wants a pet to run away or find that an item is missing. Rumpke understands we may need to make an exception for a very few individuals because of age or disability. In these cases, we request that the resident sign a release form giving us permission to enter his property and absolving us of any liability.
2. It is not mandatory but we do request that residents bag all loose trash. This makes for a much cleaner transfer from the resident’s trashcan to our container. It is acceptable to place some larger items directly into the trashcan but loose items should be bagged.
3. Items a resident wants to keep should not be stored in or near the trashcans. You’ve heard the saying that one man’s trash is another’s treasure. If it is in, on, or around the trashcan, we are going to throw it away. It is all trash to us. We request that items a resident wants to keep remain a good distance from the trashcans. We don’t want to dispose of anyone’s treasure.
As we start a new year, we are pleased to continue our relationship with your city. By following these guidelines, we hope to eliminate potential problems or at least a few headaches. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you.
