El Cerrito Heights

New Neighborhood Service Center

Jan 20, 2000

At a ceremony on August 28, the old fire station on College Avenue one block north of El Cajon began a new career as a community service center. The old building, a genuine historical structure, has been refurbished inside and out and now stands ready to serve the community. Several local area organizations and business groups will maintain office space there: the College Area Community Council, the Rolando Community Council, the Rolando Citizens Patrol, College Business District, Code Compliance Liaison, and San Diego Neighborhood Housing Services. In addition, members of the staff of the Seventh Council District will be available on a regular basis to meet with residents of El Cerrito and hear their concerns. (Call 229-9895 for further information and to set up appointments.) Hours of operation: Mon-Fri 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Fire Station #10 opened in 1933 and remained in service until a new, larger station opened in 1977 at 62nd and Acorn. The building has been used only for storage in recent years.
The renovation project was carried out using funds from the Center City Development Corportation. Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) will manage the facility, officially named Old Fire Station #10 Community Service Center. (See accompanying story on NHS on page 2.)
