As with many projects, one has to get aggravated before any action takes place. Well, I was plenty mad when I decided that something had to be done around here. We were dealing with drunken brawls in the street, loud music all hours of the night and day, prostitutes soliciting in our yards as potential costomers drove by, and drug dealers selling and distributing right before our eyes.
We had a very weak neighborhood watch prior to this and very poor participation, but the TPD had grown more involved with NW and offered a great deal of suport in getting organized and started again. So we were off and running in no time, thanks to Officer Roy Paz, the Clark Kent of the TPD.
He got us all fired up and enthused and provided us with pamphlets, support information, and phone numbers for our neighborhood officers (called firehouse cops). Within a few meetings things started to improve. As soon as we had the support of code enforcement behind us, many of the homes that really needed to be condemned were soon cited for violations. Things started looking better in a hurry. Soon the police were picking up the hookers and arresting the pushers. It was a site to behold.
The neighborhood is actually quite nice now and we hope it will stay that way. But personal involvement is the key to maintaining any neighborhood. Without each and every person using their EYES'N'EARS, it can revert to its original dismal condidion in a matter of months.
PLEASE STAY INVOLVED!
I have been involved with my neighborhood watch for two years and have seen it change over the last year. At first there was enthusiasm and members would attend meetings regularly, but eventually complacency set in and attendence has dropped off. As with many things, when crime is down, nobody is interested in working to maintain a safe neighborhood. It is an ongoing job that everyone needs to be involved with.
However, there have been great changes here. The most rewarding thing I have noticed is that the neighbors now know each other a little better. In a community of 12 square blocks there were only a few families who knew each other. Now, through the use of NW meetings, more families know their neighbors. That alone is a great help to safety, and builds a bond between neighbors.
Lets hope that we can all get back our enthusiasm before the criminals come back to take over the neighborhood again.
