Pregnancy and your baby's first year of life are a very special time. Choices you make during this time can affect the quality of your and your baby's future. One of Healthy Start's goals is to reduce the number of low birthweight babies.
What is a low birthweight baby?
- A baby who is born weighing less than 5 1/2 pounds.
- Usually, a baby who is born too early.
- A baby at risk for developmental disabilities.
You may have a low birthweight baby if:
- You have had a previous miscarriage, low birthweight baby, diabetes, twins, triplets, etc, poor weight gain, stress, or short time span between pregnancies.
- You receive little or no prenatal care, have poor nutritional habits, smoke, drink alcohol, or take unprescribed drugs during pregnancy.
