Most of you probably remember ?“the good old days?” when your kids could ride their bikes in the street, stay out after dark and walk to school. The days when you could leave your doors unlocked and your garage door open. When your neighbors knew your name, your kid?’s names, and your dog?’s name. There were probably Cub Scout and Brownie meetings in one of your neighbors?’ homes. And on Halloween children ran like crazy from house to house, unencumbered by adult supervision.
Many things have changed in our world since those days, most of which cannot be changed now that the ?“genie?” is out of the bottle. But there is something that can be done to restore a big part of those fondly remembered days. And it is totally within our power to make it happen right here in our own backyard.
You might be surprised to learn that many Forest Oak residents don?’t know their closest neighbors. The simple act of meeting and learning something about those that live around you can go a long way towards making our neighborhood a better and safer place to live. Good neighbors can be a help during an emergency, be an extra set of eyes to watch your house when you aren?’t at home, or an extra set of hands when you need them and, joined with our other neighbors, be a strong voice in local political issues.
I understand that many people prefer to live ?‘cocooned?’ in their own homes, but I encourage each of you to make that little extra effort to meet your neighbors. Even if it is just to wave ?‘Hi?” when you see them, it will help make Forest Oaks an even better community!
