Dear Neighbors,
Spring is coming soon! As I write, this has been a warm, dry, beautiful, but WINDY weekend. As we all get out and do our yard work, this is a great time to pick up the litter that has blown in front of our houses and businesses. I thought this would be a good time to share some numbers. It is important to take note of the graffiti you see and make phone calls just as soon as you see it. The Graffiti Hotline is 823-7974. The Nuisance number for weeds, trash, etc., is 823-7306, and the general information number is 823-4000 for all other questions. If you want to get even more involved, there are volunteer opportunities available through the Foster Target Area, c/o Shanna Eller, 232-0010, x19. Tree planting will be on March 11, 2000. There will also be another neighborhood clean-up on May 20 this year. These are both good volunteer opportunities for fun, fulfilling work. Call Shanna for more information.
At the January meeting we had candidates for City Council, Charlie Hales and Ted Piccolo. Both candidates talked for a bit about their respective position on issues such as light rail. We had an opportunity to personally ask Mr. Hales to review the rejected stop sign at 76th & Center. Unfortunately, after the review, the Department of Transportation continues to reject the need for a stop sign there. Bruce Clark asked Mr. Hales to work with him so that the City will not condemn and destroy the historic trolley station at 101st & Woodstock. Mr. Hales has requested the Office of Planning and Development Review to extend application time by 30 days.
At the January meeting, the membership age for voting in the neighborhood association was changed from 18 years to 15 years, partially in recognition of the maturity of our youth and the volunteer work that they do in our neighborhood.
In February Phyllis Shelton came from the Neighborhood Pride Team and Rebecca Slak came from Trillium Artisans, to talk about the work they are doing. Part of what they are doing is an informational booklet listing various associations in our neighborhoods, with volunteer opportunities and lists of resources.
In March Bruce Sternberg will be at the meeting to discuss how Southeast Uplift is doing in our neighborhood, and to answer any questions we might have about Southeast Uplift.
Also in March, Nick Sauvie of Rose CDC is expecting to make a presentation of the new design for the proposed row house and daycare at 77th & Raymond.
In April, we will have an opportunity to review with the owner of OM Seafood how well the good neighbor agreement is working. We will also hear from the Local Option Campaign concerning increased funding for schools.
May is the Neighborhood Association election month. This is your chance to come forward and run for office or choose another candidate. Positions available are President (currently Cindy Peek), Vice President (currently Bruce Clark), Secretary/Treasurer (currently Candace Murray), Land Use Chair (currently Ken Pliska), delegate to SE Uplift (currently vacant).
In July, our regular meeting date falls on July 4. Please phone 775-3006 or check the website link (printed at the bottom of the page) to see if, and when there will be a meeting.
In August, we anticipate another neighborhood picnic in Essex Park as we had last year. We had a good turnout last year, and I think everybody had a good time.
The website - www.neighborhoodlink.com/portland/foster - is now getting more than 100 hits a month. There is an opportunity to read the neighborhood newsletter, see a city-wide event calendar, chat live with other neighbors, create your own home page, and get involved in discussions on topics that interest you. You may also post items to the community calendar yourself.
Meetings are always on the FIRST Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the St. Anthony Parish Hall, 3618 SE 79th (green and white building at south end of the complex-please use the south door). Call Cindy Peek at 775-3006 for more information, or e-mail me at clpeek@aol.com.
