Dear Neighbors,

At the March meeting, Nick Sauvie came from Rose Community Development to present new plans for the proposed development at 77th & Raymond. To refresh your memory, Rose was given the property by Multnomah County to develop a five-plex with a day care facility, and intends to deconstruct the existing house and garage. The new plans are definitely an improvement over the first set of plans. For example, there will be three separate buildings, set further back from the sidewalk, with an open courtyard. There will be four parking places for the five units. Unfortunately, the plans still do not include saving the large elm tree on the property or incorporating the existing house. Deconstruction may start as soon as next month, and will be a careful process that recycles most of the building materials of the existing house.

Several neighbors came to talk about crime issues in the neighborhood. Apparently there have been a lot of slashed tires. I understand that Neighborhood Watch programs are forming, and that Rhetta Deason, our Crime Prevention Specialist (working out of Southeast Uplift?’s office), at 232-0010, x. 18, can help you get involved. She and the police are aware of the problem and are working to solve it. Park off the street if you can, park in well-lighted places, and don?’t leave personal property in your car. Please remember to call in EVERY crime incident to the police. They recognize statistics. You may feel like your call isn?’t important, but it goes into a computer and helps form a pattern.

I am getting very excited at the increased visits to the neighborhood web site, www.neighborhoodlink.com/portland/foster. But there is one feature that hasn?’t been used at all. There is a discussion forum on the web site where you can post your views and hear back from your neighbors about things that matter to you. You can also post your personal web page, or post community notices. You can even post notices for a garage sale or a lost pet. Let me know if you have any suggestions to improve the site.

Upcoming meetings:

At the April meeting, we will review the good neighbor agreement with OM Seafood. We will also talk about the possibility of fencing the Pioneer Cemetery at SE Holgate & 82nd. The Local Option Campaign will talk with us about increased funding for schools.

May is the Neighborhood Association election month. Please come to cast your vote for President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Land Use Chair, and delegate to SE Uplift.
