Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association

May 2000 Newsletter

Jul 02, 2000

Dear Neighbors,

Neighborhood elections were held in May. The following officers were elected to serve until May 2001:

President ?– Cynthia Peek
Vice-President ?– Bruce Clark
Secretary-Treasurer ?– Kathleen Gagnon-Witter
Delegate to Southeast Uplift ?– Steve Witter
Land Use ?– Bruce Clark

Steve Witter was chosen and agreed to serve as alternate delegate to Lents Urban Renewal. The position remains open for our delegate to Lents Urban Renewal. Any resident of the Foster-Powell neighborhood may be chosen to serve as our delegate, and we would like to confirm a representative at the next Foster-Powell meeting. The Lents Urban renewal boundaries include the property within Foster-Powell north of SE 79th to SE 82nd. If you live within those boundaries we are particularly interested in hearing from you, but it is not a requirement to your serving.

Mt. Scott Pool and Community Center
Representatives came to talk about the proposed fee structure at the Mt. Scott Community Center. Fees will be higher (Adults 18-59 $3.00, Seniors 60+ and Teens 13-17 $2.25, and children 3-12 $1.75 for a ?“Drop-In Visit?”), but that will be offset by the use of all of the Center?’s amenities for as long as you wish to stay. Once a visitor leaves the premises, the visit will be considered over, and a new fee will have to be paid. I will bring the handouts given to me to the June meeting.

New Teen Club in the Works at old Organ Grinder/Cosmos Location
Kristi Johnston came to talk about her plans for a proposed teen dance club at the old Organ Grinder/Cosmos location. The club is proposing a 3:00 a.m. closing time and intends to serve up to 400-500 young people from about age 16-21. Ms. Johnston has a personal background in adult corrections and is sure she will have adequate security. Neighbors expressed concerns about the late closing time ?– curfew for under 18 is at midnight. They also expressed concerns about the impact on close neighbors. Ms. Johnston said that the patrons would not be allowed to exit and re-enter without paying a new cover charge. This is intended to discourage parking lot problems. Ms. Johnston will consider surveillance cameras for the parking lot. Neighbors expressed concern about controlling under-age smoking. Neighbors expressed concern about traffic being released at such a late hour with minors driving. Ms. Johnston said that the traffic flow would be directed away from the neighborhood to minimize problems. Ms. Johnston said that the building would be given a face-lift inside and out, there will be a parking lot patrol, a metal detector at the door, and that persons under 18 will not be admitted after midnight to discourage curfew violations. There will be soft drinks, coffee, etc. There is no plan at this time for live music. The proposed opening date is around July 7.

Upcoming Meetings
The next meeting will be on June 6. Because of the Fourth of July holiday, there will be no meeting in July. On August 1, we will have a potluck in Essex Park at SE 76th & Center from 7:00 to 9:00. Bring your ideas for the potluck to the June meeting. It was really fun last year, and we met a lot of new people.

Meetings are always on the FIRST Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the St. Anthony Parish Hall, 3618 SE 79th (green and white building at south end of the complex-please use the east door). Call Cindy Peek at 775-3006 for more information, or e-mail me at clpeek@aol.com.
