Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association

June 2000 Newsletter

Dear Neighbors,

Representative Needed:
Did you know that a portion of Foster-Powell between 80th and 82nd Aves. is within the Lents Urban Renewal boundaries? I have been elected as Chair of the Lents Urban Renewal Advisory Committee. We are therefore in need of a representative from Foster-Powell to sit as Foster-Powell?’s representative on the Urban Renewal Advisory Committee. This would require a commitment of one meeting on the second Tuesday of each month, from 7:00 to 9:00. Four of these meetings per year are advisory committee meetings where policy is set, and the other eight are meetings where specific project planning takes place. We are already benefiting from urban renewal in Foster-Powell. Construction on a wrought iron fence around the Pioneer Cemetery on 82nd & Holgate will probably begin sometime this fall. Home ownership and home repair programs are available through Portland Development Commission and other agencies to give low income families opportunities to purchase or repair their homes. You will have an opportunity to participate in the redevelopment of downtown Lents, parks and greenspaces and/or the development of a community center in Lents.

Crime-fighting Volunteer Opportunities
There are three volunteer opportunities: (1) A volunteer is needed to man the graffiti camera and log incidents of graffiti; (2) a volunteer is needed to retrieve and locate the speed monitoring vehicle that tells motorists how fast they are going, in key places throughout the neighborhood; and (3) a volunteer is needed to work toward solving traffic engineering problems such as the dangerous crosswalk on Foster at 72nd, and locations where speed bumps may be needed. A security clearance will definitely be needed for the ?“speed wagon.?” We are also looking for information about your opinion of the most problematic crime issues in Foster-Powell. Call Rhetta Deason at 232-0010, x24, or Cindy Peek at 775-3006 for more information.

Upcoming Meetings:
Because our meeting date falls on July 4 this year, we will not have a meeting in July. Enjoy your Holiday!

Our meeting in August will be a picnic at 7:00 p.m. in Essex Park, at SE 79th & Center, to coincide with National Night Out. Look for the banner and bring food and kids. It was a good time for all last year!

Meetings are always on the FIRST Tuesday of each month (except as noted above) from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the St. Anthony Parish Hall, 3618 SE 79th (green and white building at south end of the complex-please use the south door). Call Cindy Peek at 775-3006 for more information, or e-mail me at clpeek@aol.com; more information is available at www.neighborhoodlink.com/portland/foster.
