Dear Neighbors,

We had our National Night Out picnic in Essex Park on August 1. People gathered for food, safety information, and conversation. There will be brochures full of information about safety and crime prevention at the next few meetings that are left over the National Night Out picnic. There are also still a few safety whistles, plug protectors and night-lights.

September meeting
Our regular meeting schedule will resume in September. The next meeting is going to be on September 5 (please see details about time and place at the end of the article), and we have a very full agenda.

Onyx Club
The underage dance club located in the old Organ Grinder/Cosmos building at 82nd & Raymond is now open. I have had several calls about the club, and Rhetta Deason, our crime specialist (232-0010 x 24), has invited the owner to come to our meeting to meet the neighbors who are affected by the business. Some of the concerns I have heard from neighbors are about late-night noise interfering with sleep, traffic flow through the neighborhood, questions in general about security and how the business is run, and the late hours. On the other hand, I have heard good things from the viewpoint of the club's patrons. Word is that security is thorough, and it feels safe inside. If you have questions to ask the owner, this is your chance to be heard. We hope to develop a good neighbor agreement with the business that should alleviate some of the worries.

Red's
Red's Bar and Grill is now open for business. Neighbors have called to talk about engine noise, parking lot noise (again, being able to sleep is an issue), lighting issues, and other concerns. The owner has been invited to our next meeting. Some proposed solutions to the concerns are for architectural landscaping to block light and sound along 71st Ave, or a six-foot fence along 71st Ave., and redirecting parking so that headlights don't aim into the surrounding houses.

Foster Target Area Project
The Foster Target Area Project is moving into its next phase, where the focus will be on the commercial corridor roughly twenty blocks long along Foster Road either side of the Holgate intersection. Some of the improvements you might notice along Foster include business landscaping and tree planting. Many of the activities that were worked in conjunction with the target area will be continuing, such as residential street tree planting and the annual neighborhood clean-up at Arleta School. Shanna Eller at Southeast Uplift (232-0010 x 19) will be continuing as our staff person and can answer any questions you have, or about how you can be more involved in the project.

Meetings are always on the FIRST Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the St. Anthony Parish Hall, 3618 SE 79th (green and white building at south end of the complex-please use the south door).
