Getting to the root of the disease

Childhood sexual abuse accounts for over 75% of men, women, and broken family issues. Childhood sexual abuse is very much connected to the adulthood problems of the families, individuals, and communities of today.

Children survivors finds it easier to cope through a world of fantasy in order to deal with the pain of reality "they have been assaulted and betrayed by someone they love and trusted to take care of them and protect them". Many emotions arise from the abuse including the inability to trust, perfectionism, phobias, and avoidance of both intimacy and emotional bonding. Some of the social behaviors arise also from the abuse as the child grows into adulthood such as substance abuse, prostitution and promiscuity.

Devastating effects of Childhood trauma

We see the effects of childhood trauma in through the 95% of substance abusers that enter treatment, 85% of incarcerated individuals, 70%of mentally ill women, 60% of homeless parents and in the children that end up in foster care system, while many contract the H.I.V./ AIDS virus and other STD's as a consequence of behavior.

Parenting , sanity, sexuality, self-esteem, intimate relationships and ability maintain a stable career are affect by childhood sexual abuse.

The result is a overwhelming number of survivors in the New York City social service systems that are not recieving appropriate services that would enable them to live healthy stable lives. It is time for a change in the way assessment and services are administered and we need to begin to deal with the root cause instead of just stablizing the symptoms of the cause.

When what once worked no longer does, what do we do?

Presently Glory is providing workshops that expose the effects through educating individuals, family and community. Many survivors are trapped by the secrets, shame,and guilt. Their community members may not even know they are there. Glory provides education and direction through workshops. Glory is not funded through the government and in support of it's funding charges a fee for workshops. Counseling suggestions are given as well as support groups using the 12-step concept for those that want to begin the recovery process.
