About Gate City Day Nursery Association
A Quality Early Childhood Program Organized 1905 Charted 1919
Licensed by the State Of Georgia
Mission Statement: The Mission of the Gate City Day Nursery Association is to provide a multicultural, wholistic approach to education, and social services for children and families. We provide and maintain high self-esteem, empowerment and motivation of families through our commitment to excellence with dedicated staff and supportive services. In achieving our mission, we are committed to: Helping our children achieve at their fullest potential; to strengthen families; and to enrich our community as we strive for excellence.
History: The Gate City Day Nursery Association was organized in 1905 for the purpose of providing and maintaining free kindergarten in Atlanta for African American children. A series of Atlanta University conferences studying African American home life, under the direction of Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, revealed the need for some type of agency to care for neglected children. Mothers working full time during the day were unable to meet the financial demands of private daycare. A group of women, mostly African American, meet this challenge by forming ?“The First Congregational Mission Sunday School,?” the first kindergarten for African American children in Atlanta. Today there are seven schools located in Atlanta and Marietta, and services are rendered to all children regardless of race, creed, sex, or national origin.
Objectives:
To provide a safe and wholesome enviroment which maximizes the child`s full potential; intellectually, socially, physically and emotionally. To provide social services which enhance family relationships and help with child rearing issues. Help working parents whose children require childcare, or parents who are unable to provide developmental care at home.
