Girl Scouts in Monroe County

The Girl Scout troops on the Florida Keys are part of the Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida headquatered in Miami. There are four Service Units in the Florida Keys, Key West (SU-1), Lower Florida Keys (SU-2), Marathon (SU-3) and the Upper Keys (SU-4). SU-2 manages and organizes the Girl Scout troops from Big Coppitt Key to the Seven-Mile-Bridge.

The Girl Scout program teaches and empowers girls to grow strong, to try new things, and to believe that they can do anything they set their minds to. They learn new crafts and hobbies, they learn about their government, the environment and the world around them, and they learn to get along with people who are different themselves.

Local Area

Currently, there are 10 Girl Scout troops in the Lower Florida Keys. Many of the troops meet at Sugarloaf Elementary School or at various places on Big Pine Key including the Big Pine Charter School. The troops usually start their new year in August/September with the start of the school year and end in May/June.

Besides troop meetings, the Service Unit and the Girl Scout Council usually try to plan at least one special activity a month. These activities include selling calendars and cookies, holiday parties and get togethers, community service work, and camping. Every October we have a Fall Festival/Pumpkin Patch party at St. Peter's Catholic church, in November we march in the Veteran's Day parade in Key West, in December we go Christmas Caroling on the Conch Tour Train with our families, and we have a Service Unit campout in the spring at Camp Wesumkee. Also, the Girl Scouts from the Lower Keys do community service work including running the game booths at the Rotary's Kids Karnival held in March.

Volunteers and Recruitment

We are always looking for volunteers to help as leaders and co-leaders, but we also need people with special skills and talents who would want to share their talents with our young ladies.

Recruiting girls who want to be Girl Scouts is done throughout the year. Our big recruitment night is usually held the end of August.

There are many age levels in the Girl Scout organization. Pre-K and Kindergarten girls are Daisies, Brownies are Grade 1-3, Juniors are Grade 3-6, and Cadettes are grade 7 and up to high school.
