History of Gramercy Park

"Home is where the heart is"

Gramercy Park is patterned after exclusive and aristocratic Louisburg Square in Beacon Hill in Boston.

Gramercy had its beginnings in 1968 with planning by the Alex Bascom Company and in 1970 the development became a joint venture with the Business Men's Assurance Company. Originally, the adjacent area known as New london (now Gramercy Place) was also to be a part of Gramercy Park.

The plan was altered and New London became a rental apartment complex with its residents sharing our clubhouse and recreational facilities. In 1977, when New London became an owner-occupied complex and assumed the name Gramercy Place, our association with them was ended. Most units in Gramercy Place are now owned by their occupants and they are now completely independent from us, though their name is similar.

As time passed, it became apparent to Gramercy Park Homes Association members that it should assume control of the management. A Board of Directors was elected in 1974 and Gramercy Park was divided into districts, each with a representative of its own.

A management company was contracted to handle day-to-day operations at Gramercy Park. Under the supervision of the Board, Associated Services, LTD. performed this function until September 1989. At that time, the Board hired an on-site Manager. In April 1994 the board agreed to change the on-site Manager position to a clerical position. In addition, a general maintenance technician is employed to serve Gramercy Park and be available to perform work for homeowners, at their expense, as time allows.
