Notes for Green Spring Gardeners-September

Sep 04, 2004

Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.

This maxim must be recognized and accepted from time to time and September is an excellent place in the season to consider the application of the principle to lawn and garden. If the gardening projects set in motion last spring did not work out, the gardener should make the best of the way things worked out by effecting significant changes in lawn and garden.
If mature fruit trees have not borne fruit for several years, September is the time to consider replacing them with new young trees.
If tomato plants in the vegetable garden succumbed to disease, September is the time to plan and dig a tomato bed in a new location in the yard. Next May the cultivated bed will be ready to accept fresh plants, giving the gardener hope for large, tasty tomatoes by the fourth of July.
September is a good point in the gardening year to replace overgrown shrubs in the front of the house with immature shrubs, perhaps of different varieties. This accomplishment will provide a renovated landscape for the house fa?§ade.
September is not too late to reseed the lawn to replace undesirable varieties of grass which may have infiltrated the lawn over a period of years.
Having completed major projects in the lawn and garden in September the gardener can anticipate with pleasure the next gardening year. He will have made the best of the way things worked out.
