There is a shortage of space in neighborhood co-operative preschools. Many families are driving long distances to take their child to a quality preschool program. The necessity for a local alternative was clear to several neighborhood families we needed to create our own preschool here in the inner SE. The preschool will serve the neighborhoods of Sunnyside and Richmond allowing parents to walk or use public transit to reach a central location. Two meetings were held during July and three more are scheduled for August to share the idea with the community.
Co-operative preschools allow parents to participate actively in their child's early education alongside a professional educator. Our vision is families coming together to make a school where your child would find:
Mixed ages
Lots of playtime
Art & music
Nature activities
Gentle guidance from caring adults
Diverse families
We want input from local parents of preschool-aged (ages 3 and 4 in Fall 2002) or younger children. Even if your child is registered for preschool elsewhere, we?’d love to have you join us to see if we can keep you in the neighborhood. Two meetings of interested families and teachers are scheduled in August:
The meeting dates for August are:
August 8 & 15 6:30-8:30 at SE Uplift , 3534 SE Main (two blocks north of Hawthorne)
August 17 3-5 at Belmont Library, 1038 SE 39th
An RSVP is helpful, but not required. For more information or to RSVP contact Cindi Carrell at 503/232-0880 or ccarrell@teleport.com.
