The Heckscher Drive and Fort George communities were established over a hundred years ago, however the area population remained small until homes were constructed in Hecksher Drive Estates in the early 1950's.
The Heckscher Drive Community Club (HDCC) organized in 1950 to meet the civic, social and educational needs of the Fort George, Heckscher Drive communities. In 1952, HDCC chartered with the state of Florida and in 1960, HDCC constructed the clubhouse on property acquired by club members in 1954. In 1992, the Heckscher Drive Community Club became a 501-c7 non-profit corporation.
The Heckscher Drive Community Club is represented on the Citizens Planning Advisory Committee (CPAC), the Sheriffs Advisory Council (ShAdCoO), the Northside Civic Association (NCA), the Friends of the St. Johns River Ferry, the New Berlin ENclave (fromerly the St. Johns River Preservation Association), and Mayport/Ft. George Seafood Festival, Inc.
HDCC has received awards and certificates from the Mimi and Lee Adams Environmental Foundation, the Mayor, and Jax Pride. In 1996 and 1999, the Mayor's Neighborhood Matching Grants program awarded the club funds for landscape beautification.
The Heckscher Drive neighborhood encompasses over 1500 households and approximately 4000 persons who live from I-95 at Heckscher Drive to the Duval/Nassau county line.
