Sara Kalinoski from the Clark County Mentoring Roundtable talked about different mentoring opportunities in Clark county. Anyone who has a few hours a month can help. There are opportunities at schools to help with homework, reading or on the playground. Big Brothers and Big Sisters is another organization that needs volunteers. You need to be 18 years old, and the organizations run a background and criminal check. No special skills are needed – just a little of your time. If you want to find out more, here is the website:

David Sauerbrey with the District 5 Fire Department talked about fire safety. With winter here and fireplace and heaters going all the time, some simple precautions can save your life.
1. Check your smoke detectors – change the batteries twice a year. Even hard wired detectors have batteries. If it’s over 10 years old, consider getting a new one. The fire department can help you change them if you need assistance.
2. Keep curtains, papers, kindling, etc faw away from the heat source. He told a sad story about a house full of people that burned to the ground because of newspapers stacked next to a baseboard heater, and curtains hanging too close. Keep everything 3 feet away!
3. Take your fireplace ashes to a metal can and dowse with water. Put them outside, not in the garage. Don’t assume they are out, make sure!
4. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Many kitchen fires get out of control very quickly. I have one, but never thought I’d use it.
5. Classes for first aid, cpr, etc are offered at the Northwest Regional Fire Training Center. To see what’s available check out their website: www.nwrtc.org
On a personal note - Recently a gel candle flared up with flames over 18 inches high. In a panic, my son grabbed it and ran out the front door and threw it. The glass shattered and flaming gel covered my front walk and entryway. I extinguished it, then took my son to urgent care for his burned
hand. You just never know!
Eastgate Plaza was briefly talked about. They are supposed to break ground this month. The first phase is road improvement.
