“People come by weekly and stop to take pictures,” says Jody O’Connor of her home’s inviting front yard. Bordered by a Japanese Boxwood hedge with a welcoming Potato Ivy covered trellis that blooms year round, the yard is virtually unrecognizable from the simple grass lawn it was they bought they house in 1990. The traffic-stopping star of the yard is a breathtaking Angel’s Trumpet tree with huge, peach-colored downward blossoms. The tree is especially beautiful to Jody, her husband Chris, and their four children as it was a gift from Jay Muir, who became a treasured friend while remodeling their house. Jody laid out the landscaping herself with help from gardener Alfredo Rodriguez. “The plants were chosen not only for their looks, but also their fragrance. It smells wonderful at night,” says Jody. The Angel’s Trumpet’s delicate aroma mixes with lavender and rose varieties from local nurseries including Iceberg, First Prize and Jefferson roses. An evening stroll down historic Chula Vista Avenue reveals not only the O’Connor’s delightful garden, but also an original Lantern Village lantern standing tall in the front yard of a home two houses down!
