Located on Richmond's protected Inner Harbor, Marina Bay began in 1985 as a major effort to clean up and restore the natural environment for conversion to residential and business use. Today Marina Bay has 2100 residents in 2000 housing units and 70 large and small businesses in 300,000 sq. ft. of commercial space. We like to think of Marina Bay as Richmond’s redevelopment gem because, since those early days of building Liberty ships in the Kaiser Shipyards for the war effort during WWII, Marina Bay is now home to:
- the expanding high tech community in gleaming new office buildings,
-the beautiful waterfront- hugging Bay Trail,
- the Rosie the Riveter Memorial (National Park),
-lovely Marina Bay Park,
- a long shoreline esplanade
-the picturesque marina itself,
-and Shimada Friendship Park.
among other Marina Bay natural joys and amenities. There will be with more to come in the form of additional housing, shops and restaurants in another million square feet that is either already under construction or is planned. While a cohesive community in its own right, Marina Bay is a source of pride for the entire city and region and a recreational and cultural amenity used by the entire Richmond community.
The City of Richmond has a long, strong tradition of self-governance and wisely set up the Richmond Neighborhood Coordinating Council consisting of 31 neighborhood councils representing the diverse neighborhoods in Richmond. The City of Richmond looks to the neighborhood councils as the official spokespersons for the neighborhood. The Marina Bay Neighborhood Council (MBNC) is one of the newest officially recognized and City-sanctioned neighborhood council associations of neighbors, and is supported by City staff.
The goal of the MBNC is to achieve balance and harmony between the residents who live here and the new businesses that are moving to Marina Bay and making it grow. Through planning, discussion and mutual respect, we preserve the good life here for everyone by balancing the needs of residents and business alike through working with:
Planning Department and Commission
Redevelopment Agency
Richmond City Council...
...all of which look to the MBNC for input from the neighborhood. And through neighbors coming together to share fun and work, a sense of community and mutual protection is created.
Selected Accomplishments of the MBNC:
-Promoted right mix of businesses (no alcohol sales, for example)
-Helped influence Longs and other regional chains to build in Harborgate
-Convinced CalTrans to build safety fences at freeway exit ramp
-Worked to limit negative impact of heavy industry on central Marina Bay
-Influenced State Dept. of Health Services to conform to Marina Bay "look"
-Petitioned City and CalTrans to erect better truck traffic signs
-Continued tangible impact on City services provided to Marina Bay
-Business Roundtables
