Our Gardens
August 18, 2007: The Maple Tree Coalition dedicated Maple Tree/Millwood Park community gardens. The project represents a unique school community partnership. The garden is the product of a coalition of organizations that include the City of Milwaukee, Growing Power, Maple Tree School (MPS), Millwood Park Neighborhood Association, Granville Heritage Neighborhood Association, West Granville Presbyterian Church and area businesses, churches and individuals. This coalition has worked together for the past-year-and-a-half on this project that will benefit the children of our school and neighborhood through learning sustainable farming methods, entrepreneur skills and healthy eating habits. Millwood Park is proud to have the support system of this coalition. This is what community is all about, working together at building better tomorrows!

We received permission to turn a vacant city lot on 106th just north of Mill Rd. into Millwood Park Gardens. Youth have participated in this project to help plant and care for the park. A ground breaking ceremony was held July 14th 2006 at 6:00 PM attended by Alderman Jim Bohl, neighborhood contributors and partners along with members of the summer basketball league and many residents. Residents and youth tilled the soil and planted bushes and flowers. Trees were planted October 1st 2006.

Events

Each year the Neighborhood holds several cleanup days. May 5, 2007 - Neighborhood cleanup from 10AM to 12PM. Followed by a cookout where 40 bikes were given to participating youth. Helmets and locks were also provided. Dave Schlebowse, Milwaukee Bike and Pedestrian coordinator spoke on safety and bike use. Maps were handed out for bike paths. Bike Registrations were also provided. Dave helped fit helmets. All youth participants received a bike with a smile. Bikes were donated by friends of Millwood Park.
Mayor Tom Barrett joined us to kickoff the cleanup. Alderman Bohl was present and presented Sharon Drobinski with a check of $200 to go toward the Youth In Action programs.

West Granville Presbyterian church, Northtown Church, Maple Tree School and Millwood Park organized a tutoring program for 2006/2007 at the school. This is an ongoing effort and anyone interested in joining this program should contact Principal Jupka at Maple Tree School at 578-5100.

Youth Recreation

Millwood Park Neighborhood Association, Youth In Action, (YIA) and The Seventh-Day Adventist church joined in partnership to host a summer 2006 basketball league for neighborhood youth ages 12 - 15 and was held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:30 PM, July 11th through August 17th at MJA (Milwaukee Junior Academy) gym facilities located at 10900 West Mill Road. The neighborhood league consisted of 4 teams. Jerseys were provided and an awards banquet was held at the end of season play. YIA offers open gym throughout the year and a safe haven for our youth to connect with mentors and discuss their day to day issues. The Youth In Action program continues to reach out to the children, and this summer (2007) they have spent their days in the neighborhood meeting with the parents of the children that they work with and forming family relationships.
The partnership is expanding for a fall basketball league. We have been joined by the Zion Baptist Church on Fond du lac Ave. and we are still in the planning stage of growing the program.
In 2007 youth from the neighborhood were able to join a school planned Carnival Night in February. They also enjoyed an activity filled all night lock-in held in March.
YIA also holds bible studies and retreats for the neighborhood children and continue to open their doors throughout the year to connect with our youth.

Building Better Tomorrows For Our Neighborhood

The Millwood Park Neighborhood Association in Milwaukee WI was organized in May 2005. There are approximately 800 homes in our area with the borders of Lynx Ave on the south, 107th Street on the west, and along Fond du lac Ave Northeast. We have built partnerships with schools, churches and businesses in our area to create programs for our community. We have participated in establishing accessible tutoring and recreational activities for our children. We have developed landscape improvements through neighborhood cleanups and the addition of Millwood Park Gardens. We are vigilant in working with the Police and Sheriff's dept. to keep our neighborhood safe. We are "Building Better Tomorrows".

Mission Statement

Millwood Park Neighborhood Association is an organization whose goal it is to meet the needs of it's varied residents with programs that promote a safe and healthier environment within the community.
