OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Our Neighborhood Association Mission...

The Musgrave-Pennington Neighborhood Association is organized for, and shall be operated exclusively for the purposes of:

  • Improving and beautifying the neighborhood;
  • Educating members on the prevention ofresidential crime (burglary, vandalism, etc.);
  • Improving neighborhood and community relations.
  • Promoting a better community through groupaction
  • Increasing the safety of neighborhood residentsby organizing, operating and maintaining an active neighborhood patrol.

Since it's beginning ten years ago, the association has done an excellant job of living up to it's original intent.

A few of the association's many accomplishments include:

  • Our large brick neighborhood entry signs on both ends of N.W. 19th (our only boulevard);
  • Street lights on the 19th Blvd. median from Portland Ave. to Meridian Ave.;
  • Our "Neighborhood Watch" and "Patrolled" signs at all 26 entrances to the neighborhood;
  • Our Neighborhood Patrol program, which has been instrumental in the large percentage reduction in our crime rate;
  • Park benches placed on the 19th Blvd. median(with another to be placed in Quapah Park);
  • Flower beds on the 19th Blvd. median and in Quapah Park (with additional bed work upcoming at both locations);
  • Trees added to the 19th Blvd. median, Quapah Park and Buchanan Elementary School (in addition to other projects with which we have helped the school);
  • Our "Home of the Month" program;
  • Our "New Neighbor" packet program, and
  • Additional traffic control signs.

The association currently has over 487 home memberships and more than 180 active volunteers. The association holds four meetings per year, which serve as both a social event (barbeque dinner, ice cream social, chili supper, etc.) and the opportunity to conduct association business. A newsletter, used to keep residents up-to-date on their neighborhood and on current association projects, is delivered six times per year (every other month.)

The association depends on it's members $10.00 yearly dues for funding. All association programs and activities (board officers, flower beds, Adopt-A-Park, newsletter delivery and, most importantly, our Neighborhood Patrol) are staffed by volunteers: neighbors working with neighbors to promote the type of neighborhood in which we all want to live.

The residents of Musgrave-Pennington have moved into their neighborhood because of it's nice overall appearance, low crime rate and neighbors working with neighbors to maintain the quality of life afforded in our neighborhood. Your participation is needed in order to preserve and promote the very reason you chose your neighborhood: OUR PEOPLE CARE!

Our Neighborhood

Musgrave-Pennington is a well-established, and well kept neighborhood. Most of the homes were built in the early 1950's, are of brick or stone construction with conventional foundations, and feature oak floors, central heat and air systems, chain link or stockade fences and attached or detached garages.
Many of our neighbors pride themselves on their well-cared-for lawns, and there are numerous mature trees throughout the neighborhood.
The Musgrave-Pennington neighborhood is bounded on the south by N.W.16th St., on the north by N.W. 23rd St., on the east by Portland Ave. and on the west by Meridian Ave. One-half square mile in size, our neighborhood contains approximately 1265 residences and is four miles west/northwest of downtown Oklahoma City.
OUR AREA
Because Musgrave-Pennington is only three blocks west of Interstate 44 and a mile and a half north of Interstate 40, our residents can leave home and be anywhere in Oklahoma City in a matter of minutes- not that we have to go far, as our neighborhood is situated amid plentiful restaurants, shopping centers and grocery stores. All of OKC's major shopping malls can be reached quickly and easily. Will Rogers World Airport is only a fifteen minute drive, as is OKC's newest attraction, Bricktown, with it's restaurants, night life and events.
EDUCATION
Musgrave-Pennington is proud to be the home of James Buchanan Elementary School, which on Wednesday, November 14, 2001, held a Rededication Ceremony in celebration of it's fiftieth anniversary! Our heartiest congratulations to Principal Kaufman, the teachers and staff of Buchanan Elementary!(To visit Buchanan on the web, click on the hyperlink below).
Our neighborhood is served by Taft Middle School and Northwest Classen High School, both of which are within two miles. (With the passage of the "MAPS for KIDS" tax package, all three of these schools are in line for major improvements [and are not among those schools in the Oklahoma City School District which are scheduled to be closed]).
For adults seeking to further their education, Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City is less than a mile from the neighborhood and the Oklahoma State University County Extension Service Office is right next door (these good folks can answer all your questions about your lawn, gardens, trees- you name it!)
RECREATION
E.B. Jeffrey Park, at the southwest corner of our neighborhood, offers a playground and kiddie pool, while Will Rogers Park, less than a mile to our north, has a swimming pool, disc golf course, tennis courts and a duck pond. Also located there is the Garden Exhibition Center, site of numerous flower and houseplant shows (and sales). Our residents enjoy the convenience of an eight screen movie theater just down the street and many of our residents (and non-residents alike) enjoy walking and jogging down our streets (especially favoring N.W. 19th Blvd., which runs east and west through our neighborhood). The Fairgrounds (home to the State Fair of Oklahoma every September and exhibitions and shows year-round) are but a mile and a half away.
HOUSES OF WORSHIP
St. Patrick's Catholic Church is a fixture in our neighborhood, and there are numerous other churches nearby. Ridgecrest United Methodist Church, Northwest Church of Christ, Calvin Presbyterian Church, Memorial Christian Church, St. John's United Methodist Church and Portland Avenue Baptist Church are all within four blocks of the neighborhood.
THE MUSGRAVE-PENNINGTON NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION
Well into it's eleventh year of service, the Musgrave-Pennington Neighborhood Association is one of the strongest, most active associations in Oklahoma City, and at almost 500 members, one of the largest. Our 180 active volunteers: help care for our seven neighborhood flower beds (read about our NEW! neighborhood beautification project elsewhere on our website); deliver our newsletter (printed every other month); select our four "Home of the Month" recipients (awarded each month from April through October in recognition of those neighbors whose homes serve as outstanding examples to the rest of the neighborhood); serve as officers in the association; and, most important of all, serve as members of our neighborhood patrol. The Musgrave-Pennington Neighborhood Association has one of the best, most active neighborhood patrols in Oklahoma City, and, as a result, has one of the lowest crime rates of any neighborhood in the entire metropolitan area! We hold four dinner meetings per year at which we conduct association business, discuss issues of importance to the neighborhood and get better acquainted with our neighbors. We work very hard to maintain a clean, safe, attractive neighborhood and in doing so, work closely with city officials on the enforcement of city codes and ordinances. OUR goal is to provide ourselves, AND YOU, with a GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD! So if YOUR goal is to find a HOME, not just a place to live, COME JOIN US, and take an active part in one of the FINEST neighborhoods in Oklahoma City- MUSGRAVE-PENNINGTON! Because OUR PEOPLE CARE!
