The NRC Education Task Force organizes parents and residents to improve their public schools and increase educational achievement.
In the past year, the Task Force conducted a series of training sessions called Organizing for Quality ?— At Our Schools. Twenty four parent leaders from 9 schools enhanced their skills in organizing for change, fund raising, physical improvements, and school analysis. Representatives from Roosevelt, Von Steuben, Northside College Prep, Mather, and Taft High Schools learned how to raise funds, assess curricula, and other helpful skills.
This spring, NRC completed its first ESL for Parents classes. More than 65 immigrant parents attended classes at Roosevelt High School offering language instruction oriented to issues of school involvement.
NRC Education Vice President Jane Friedman identified and adapted a curriculum, Parents as Educational Partners, that brings education issues into the ESL class room for discussion.
The next round of LSC training and ESL classes will begin later this summer. Call the NRC office for more information.
